Description

The Collections and Exhibits Manager leads the care and use of the museum’s collections, managing the activities of the museum’s collections program. This position oversees both the daily and long-range collections development including management and preservation of the museum’s objects, and collection care, maintenance, safety, documentation, and use. Importantly, the position provides public access to collections, coordinate repatriation activities, and administer collections used in exhibits and programs.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS

  • Manage and maintain the museum’s large and diverse collections according to established best practices, including but not limited to documenting various types of objects and media and their supporting documentation (labeling, describing, photographing, scanning, etc.), maintaining records both in electronic form and hard copy, managing the preservation and storage of objects and supporting documentation, and manage the activities of an active museum collections program.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain collections policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with laws pertaining to collections, such as the Native American Graves Repatriation and Protection Act, Archaeological Resources Protection Act, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and the Migratory Bird Act.
  • Oversee incoming acquisitions, including obtaining appropriate legal paperwork and evaluating acquisitions.
  • Participate in Collections Advisory Committee activities.
  • Communicate with Native organizations, government agencies, donors, lenders, artists, and museum stakeholders regarding the curation of collections.
  • Oversee movement, packing, and shipping of objects.
  • Control storage areas, overseeing integrated pest management programs, and the monitoring and analysis of environmental conditions.
  • Assist in facility management and reporting.
  • Develop and manage collections projects, including planning, budget development, implementation, and reporting.
  • Disseminate collections information and provide access to collections as requested to researchers, students, agencies, owners, and lenders.
  • Participate in projects, including but not limited to, archaeological fieldwork, public outreach and the production of publications.
  • Supervise scheduling, fabrication, and installation of exhibits.
  • Assist in preparation of exhibits, including coordination of object movement and record keeping.
  • Develop and review contracts, and prepare documentation for traveling exhibits or collection loans.
  • Assist in contracting for outside services as needed, including conservation, packing, shipping, photography, and insurance.
  • Act as the museum’s Repatriation Coordinator, overseeing repatriation reporting for the museum and coordinating repatriation projects for the Kodiak Alutiiq / Sugpiaq Repatriation Commission as assigned.
  • Train, work with, and supervise the Collections and Exhibits Specialist, collection assistants, volunteers, and interns as assigned.
  • Conduct annual staff evaluations.
  • Attend staff meetings, professional training, and conferences as requested.
  • Work to maintain the museum’s state and national accreditation, and complete accreditation related activities.
  • Act as the museum’s Repatriation Coordinator, overseeing repatriation reporting for the museum and coordinating repatriation projects for the Kodiak Alutiiq / Sugpiaq Repatriation Commission as assigned.
  • Train, work with, and supervise the Collections and Exhibits Specialist, collection assistants, volunteers, and interns as assigned.
  • Conduct annual staff evaluations.
  • Attend staff meetings, professional training, and conferences as requested.
