Fellow for Diversity in the Arts

The Worcester Art Museum (WAM) seeks an exceptional fellow in the department of Prints, Drawings and Photographs. The 13 week position, supported by the Moggio Foundation, encourages the advancement of minorities within the museum community. The Fellow for Diversity in the Arts will focus on research related to upcoming exhibitions, notably Worcester contemporary photomontage artist John O’Reilly and turn-of- the-century amateur photographer William Bullard, whose collection of 5,000 negatives includes a rare group of photographs representing African Americans and Nipmuc descendants in the Worcester area.

The Fellow will report to the Assistant Curator of Prints, Drawings and Photographs, but engagement may cross-over into other areas of the museum outside of Curatorial, notably Exhibition Design and Fabrication, Registration, and Conservation.

The Diversity Fellow will be expected to research and write about objects for exhibitions as well as objects brought into the collection for potential acquisition or deaccession. Further, he or she will be expected to perform administrative tasks for the Prints, Drawings and Photographs department including the cataloguing, movement and storage of artworks as needed.

By the start of the fellowship, the candidate should be an advanced undergraduate or graduate student with a strong art historical foundation. Excellent communications skills, both oral and written, are expected, as is an ability to do independent research offsite as well as the ability to confidently engage with archival materials. Art handling experience and a broad knowledge of African American art history and/or contemporary art are highly desirable. The fellowship is a part-time, limited-term, non-exempt position requiring the candidate to be on-site two days a week for a total of 8-10 hours.
