*Associate Curator of Interpretation (Full Time, Exempt)*****

 

*Job Summary:*  The Associate Curator of Interpretation develops, supports,

and coordinates a range of in-house interpretation, which includes but is

not limited to developing and managing selected public programs for adults,

researching and writing exhibition audio tours, and developing other

exhibition-related interpretive materials. Education programs and materials

are created for the diverse communities of Middle Tennessee to encourage

life-long learning and to use the Frist Center as a resource for the arts

and humanities. The target audience includes everyone from the novice to

the connoisseur. The Associate Curator will work collaboratively within the

department of education, across the institution, and with other community

organizations as appropriate. Some weekends and evenings are required.****

 

*Essential Job Functions:*

€ Assume responsibility for the planning, managing, and evaluation of

public programs designed to build confidence and competence in looking at,

thinking, and talking about art through a broad variety of program types

and events;

€ Work directly with staff to identify the community needs and audiences

that most closely relate to or could be served by specific exhibition

programming;

€ Prioritize and balance programming needs, coordinating within the

education department and across the institution;

€ Collaborate and plan with staff for wide accessibility and practical

scheduling and use of the Frist Center auditorium, public spaces, and

classrooms; collaborate with the Tour and Programs coordinator to schedule

audio-visual technicians responsible for audio-visual support for

programming;

€ Supervise and share writing and production responsibilities for resources

in support of public programming to include program materials, marketing

and membership publications; coordinate publication and use of resources

with other Frist Center educators and the Marketing Director;

€ Emphasize object-based education as a catalyst for discussion and

learning about current exhibitions and visual culture, in the community and

at the Frist Center;

€ In collaboration with the Curator of Interpretation, create content and

curate selected education exhibitions and assist with research, writing,

and/or editing of audio tours, exhibition apps, and gallery materials as

appropriate;

€ Collaborate with staff across the institution to arrange hospitality for

visiting speakers, curators, etc.;

€ Ensure the safety and health of the public are provided for at all

on-site Frist Center public programs and events, and that City codes and

ordinances are fully met;

€ Connect art to everyday living;

€ Work with volunteers and interns in a positive and constructive manner;

€ Accept projects as assigned by supervisor.****

 

*Education:* Bachelor¹s degree required in art history, art education, or

liberal arts. Master’s degree preferred in museum education, art history,

or liberal arts.****

 

*Work Experience:* Must have 3-5 years of experience in museum education.***

*Skills and Abilities:*

€ Comprehensive knowledge of the history of art and materials culture

(Western and non-Western)

€ Knowledge of current object-based pedagogy and teaching strategies for

art education;

€ Strong research skills and the ability to write and communicate clearly

for adult audiences;

€ Experience in public speaking and presentation of programs to the

community and colleagues;

€ Ability to manage programs and facility preparations and arrangements for

small and large groups;

€ Knowledge and experience in planning, preparation and implementation of

performing arts events, film screenings, and public event programming;

€ Knowledge of educational programming for various audiences, including

non-traditional groups;

€ Familiarity with using technology to deliver content;

€ Experience working with audiences of all abilities;

€ Ability to contribute creatively in a team-oriented workplace;

€ Ability to set priorities, organize, and inspire organization in the work

of others;

€ Ability to work effectively with people on a personal level, with tact

and diplomacy;

€ Well-versed and at ease in current computer applications.****
