Drawing on a strong background in Visual Literacy that includes teaching
visual literacy to a variety of audiences, collaborate with other members of
the Education staff to establish a center for Visual Literacy. Design
related curriculum to align all the Museum’s education efforts with the
Museum’s strategic plan. Oversee management of all the Museum’s education
outreach programs. Work with Director of Education to undertake the
assessment of educational initiatives. Provide appropriate supervisory
guidance to assure that reporting staff adhere to Museum standards and
policies, departmental procedures and professional practices. Provide
management assistance to the Director of Education.
* In conjunction with other education staff, develop concepts for a
Center for Visual Literacy that will provide an effective physical
environment, appropriate equipment, and learning activities to support
visual literacy education. Develop visual literacy curriculum based on the
TMA collection and professional art education best practices. Incorporate
visual literacy curriculum into all aspects of the Museum’s education
program.
* Oversee the management of all the Museum’s education outreach and
studio arts programs. Working with the Director of Education, establish
goals, objectives and evaluations methods for all classes. Working within
budget, adjust, change, delete or broaden offerings as appropriate to meet
identified needs that will further the mission of teaching visual literacy.
Develop and manage budgets. Coach and mentor staff; conduct goal setting
and performance appraisal.
* Working with HR, establish requirements and standards for class
instructors; provide instructors with effective orientation to the Museum’s
approach to teaching visual literacy and related curriculum; provide
instructors with professional development opportunities and workshops in
collaboration with others as appropriate; provide constructive critiques
based on class evaluation.
* Manage all aspects of the Museum’s scholarship program to reach
underserved audiences.
QUALIFICATIONS:
* Master’s degree in Museum Education (preferred) or Art Education;
* minimum of four years’ experience in a similar or directly
preparatory position;
* strong knowledge of visual literacy and the demonstrated ability
to translate that into learning initiatives;
* previous experience supervising professional staff with ability to
effectively manage and motivate education staff, interns, studio instructors
and volunteers;
* ability to effectively use assigned software, including MS Office
and to learn/adapt to databases used in TMA Education Department as they
evolve. Some previous database experience helpful.

Education and Public Programs Assistant, American Philosophical Society,

Job Summary
The Education Assistant works in close collaboration with the Associate
Curator of Museum Education to implement public and education programs,
coordinate the Museum Guide Program, and recruit and schedule
volunteers. This is an entry level position.
Profile for Education Assistant:
A detail-oriented and conscientious person with excellent
organizational, multitasking and communication skills. Previous
experience with event planning and an equally strong interest in
assisting with the development of creative educational programs and
activities for students and young children. A friendly, sociable person
who can easily engage with people of diverse ages and backgrounds.
Job Duties:
Education and Public Programs
€ Assist the Associate Curator of Education with the implementation of
education and public programs (including teacher and student workshops,
school group tours)
€ Assist in creating education materials
€ Assist with social media to publicize events and programs
€ Assist with museum guide program
o Create guide schedule, manage and submit timesheets for payroll
o Assist with donations and book sales
o Schedule time in gallery, learn exhibition material in order to
substitute as guide or weekend manager
€ Maintain exhibition and program attendance log/data sheet.
Volunteer Program
€ Recruit and schedule volunteers for event staffing and assistance,
coordinate a corps of 20 volunteers
€ Organize volunteers to distribute flyers on First Fridays and
before/during selected museum events, and serve as point-person for
volunteers during events
€ Maintain and update a volunteer calendar in a timely manner
€ Help plan volunteer recognition
Other Job Requirements:
€ B.A. in humanities field/education
€Self-motivated, organized, and reliable
€ Able to work both independently and collaboratively
€ Strong administrative and organizational skills, including basic
accounting skills (to keep track of donations and book sales)
€ Creativity in developing educational programs and projects for
students and children
€ Sociable personality; easily engage with people of diverse ages and
backgrounds
€ Strong writing and verbal communication skills
€ Knowledge of Photoshop and Illustrator a plus
Special Information
Must be available to work occasional evening and weekend hours.
