The Yale Peabody Museum, with its world-class collections (numbering over
12.8 million specimens and growing), is able to bring tremendous resources
to bear on its mission: to advance knowledge and a broad understanding of
Earth’s history, life and cultures. The Director of Public Programs is key
to the Museum’s educational activities that seek to inspire people,
especially children, with a love for the natural and cultural world and an
appreciation of its importance to human health and wellbeing.
Reporting to the Director of the Peabody Museum and working with the senior
staff, the Director of Public Programs is responsible for the activities and
budgets of the Museum’s public programs including exhibitions, public
education, events, volunteers, and visitor services.
Responsibilities include managing the development, design and production of
exhibitions with support from the Curator-in-Charge of the exhibit, exhibit
staff, Conservator, Operations Manager and Collections Managers as
necessary; developing and implementing an integrated, strategic plan for
public programs in close consultation with the Director, curators and heads
of the Public Programming departments; soliciting and initiating ideas for
exhibits and educational programs, securing approval from the requisite
museum committees, and overseeing their implementation, while ensuring that
all programs integrate with the mission of the Museum; identifying,
initiating and/or fostering contact with individuals and/or community
organizations currently or potentially interested in the Museum’s public
programs, and encouraging their participation.
The Director of Public Programs will also initiate and foster relationships
with departments and schools at Yale that might participate in public
programs, and solicit and coordinate their involvement. (S)he will work
closely with the Director, the Director of External Relations, and the
Director of Development to raise funds to support Museum public programs
through grant-writing and other fund-raising efforts. Working with the
Collections staff and leveraging the Museum’s significant digital assets,
the Director of Public Programs will plan and oversee the development of
digital resources for public education and exhibitions, including the
Museum’s website.
This individual must contribute to the field of museum public programming by
participating in and presenting at conferences, workshops and meetings.
Fostering and maintaining a network of contacts at local and national
museums, the Director must maintain up to date knowledge on new research on
museum programming and techniques and how they relate to program development
and implementation.
Qualifications:
* Minimum requirement of Bachelor’s Degree in related field and five
years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and related
experience.
* In depth knowledge and proven museum management abilities in areas
such as exhibition practices, public education, audience research
techniques, strategic planning and budgeting.
* Proven ability to write grants and raise funds for public
programs.
* Proven ability to lead, supervise & train staff. Strong consensus
building skills.
* Demonstrated ability to create, develop and implement public
programming (including exhibitions and education) in a museum setting.
* Preferred: Experience in an institution with large natural history
collections. Experience with digital media. Experience in university
museums. Demonstrated understanding of the needs of museum audiences.
