Job Description
The Historical Society of Western Virginia, a leader in cultural heritage tourism dedicated to preserving the rich history of western Virginia, seeks a highly motivated Manager for the O. Winston Link Museum in Roanoke, VA. Opened in 2004 by the Historical Society of Western Virginia, the Link Museum focuses on the striking photographic and auditory works developed by artist O. Winston Link between 1955 and 1960, a successful commercial photographer from New York. This position reports to the Executive Director and supervises an Education Coordinator, Marketing Coordinator, Administrative Coordinator, and Gift Shop Supervisor, along with several volunteers.
Team member will:
- Supervise staff and volunteers in visitor services, to provide information and guidance to patrons to maximize their experience in the museum.
- Supervise staff in educational programming. to provide mission-based programs and workshops for all age groups.
- Plan and implement fundraisers and cultivate and nurture relationships with current and potential corporate & foundation sponsors and individual donors and members.
- Create annual budget for the Link Museum and implement financial procedures for the museum.
- Supervise production and distribution of informational/promotional materials for the Link Museum.
- Work with staff to create exhibits, plan and implement changing exhibitions.
- Assist with collections management.
- Work collaboratively internally and externally.
Desired Skills & Experience
The ideal applicant will have the following qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in History, Art History, or a related Liberal Arts degree is required. Master’s degree preferred.
- A minimum of two years of experience in museum operations is preferred.
- Excellent verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to write clearly and persuasively.
- Ability to develop and manage budgets and prepare financial reports.
- Interest, enthusiasm, and affinity for working with people.
- Strong partnership-building and event planning skills.
- Computer proficiency and knowledge of data base programs is required.
- High energy, positive, “can do” attitude, flexibility, teamwork, and attention to detail; high degree of initiative.
- Ability to prioritize workload, especially multiple, time-sensitive tasks.
Company Description
Led by a 27-member board of directors and employing fourteen staff, the Historical Society has been in operation since 1957 and owns and operates the History Museum of Western Virginia, the O. Winston Link Museum, and the Crystal Spring Pump Station. In addition to programs and exhibitions, the Historical Society maintains a significant online collection (Virtual Museum) and publishes an annual journal and several books each year through Kegley Publications.
