Responsible for all programs and resources that help visitors of all ages, both individuals and groups, learn about and enjoy the Museum’s collection and exhibitions. A skilled educator who enjoys working with diverse audiences, the Director of Visitor Learning trains adjunct staff and volunteers to interact with the public in the collection and special exhibitions; works closely with Visitor Services and Security staff to ensure quality experiences for all visitors; and helps develop courses, interpretive materials, and digital resources for the public.
Responsibilities
Maintaining effective Museum Teacher and Information Desk Volunteer programs
• Oversee recruitment, training, management, recognition and ongoing assessment of museum teachers and volunteers
• Maintain high morale and low attrition rate among both groups through a robust enrichment program
Act as a role model for interactive teaching
• Provide training and leadership to museum teachers and volunteers that emphasizes learner-centered, inquiry based, interactive teaching modeled on the Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) approach
• Experiment with innovative interactive teaching strategies
• Work with school and community programs staff to help shape effective teaching experiences for these audiences
Create new ways for visitors to engage in learning and enjoyment onsite and online
• Assess the Museum’s niche in the greater Boston adult education market and create programs and resources designed to attract new audiences
• Participate in the development of interpretive materials, both on-site and online
• Monitor, assess, and expand the Museum’s free tours and talks to promote engaging experiences in the galleries and special exhibitions
• Work collaboratively to implement visitor studies to assess the effectiveness of current programming and to inform new offerings
Expand the Museum’s tour program
• Supervise the Tour Manager who is responsible for booking, scheduling and processing of all student, adult and senior tours
• Develop and implement new tour topics and themes to reach strategically targeted audiences
• Collaborate with the Marketing department on tour marketing strategies to diversify audiences and grow tour revenue
Qualifications:
• MA in museum education or art history
• 3-5 years experience managing a museum docent program
• Extensive museum teaching and/or teacher training experience
• Strong interactive teaching skills and knowledge of VTS theory
• Strong organizational and leadership skills
• Strong communication, customer service/public relations skills
• Strong interpersonal and team building skills
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
