Joslyn Art Museum seeks applicants for the position of Associate Curator of European Art. This position offers a motivated individual the opportunity to create a new vision for European art at the museum, encompassing collections, exhibitions and programming. Responsibilities include installation and care of the permanent collection, ranging from the twelfth through nineteenth centuries; creating labels, gallery guides, and interpretive strategies for the collection; development of original exhibitions and installations; coordination of incoming loan exhibitions; and generating events and public programming at Joslyn and with community partners. This appointment reflects the museum’s and the community’s commitment to building a strong curatorial voice that supports its internationally-recognized collection of European painting.
Joslyn’s collection of European art includes distinguished paintings by Lorenzo di Credi, Claude Lorraine, Rembrandt van Rijn, Massimo Stanzione, Bernardo Strozzi, Titian, Paolo Veronese, and others. The museum is especially noted for the strength of its collection of nineteenth-century academic French painting, including major works by William Adolphe Bouguereau, Jules Breton, Gustave Doré, Jean-Léon Gérôme, and Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier, as well as Impressionist masterworks by Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, and Auguste Renoir.
Joslyn Art Museum is a major regional resource for the collection, preservation, and interpretation of the visual arts. Through its collections, exhibitions, and educations programs, Joslyn Art Museum seeks to foster appreciation and enjoyment of art for the benefit of a diverse regional and national audience. The museum is housed in two landmark structures, including its original 1931 building, acknowledged as one of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in the Midwest, and a 1994 addition by Sir Norman Foster, his first commission in the United States.
Job Requirements
Ph.D. in art history or ABD required (specialty in nineteenth-century French painting preferred), and three to five years’ curatorial experience in an art museum. The successful candidate will have an accomplished record of exhibitions and publications; excellent research and writing skills; be comfortable with public speaking; and a familiarity with the auction and sales market. Must have the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and build positive relationships with donors, collectors and the public. Competitive salary and benefits; generous travel allowance.
