Responsibilities: As part of the Education Division, the Senior Museum Educator is at the center of our prestigious 10-month Museum Education Internship Program (MEIP), which provides in-depth fieldwork experience for young professionals working with adult, school, youth, and family audiences. This position oversees MEIP, including the recruitment and interview process to select five to eight full-time intern educators each year. S/he trains and supervises these emerging professionals and collaborates regularly with Museum staff to foster the professional growth and proficiency of these intern educators in conducting programming for diverse audiences. The individual in this position is also responsible for coordinating aspects of other internship offerings in the institution, including planning events for interns and serving as a liaison for all departments to post internship opportunities.

The Senior Museum Educator also manages certain aspects of and teaches multi-visit programs and occasional guided gallery visits, prepares teaching resources for collection highlights and special exhibitions, and contributes to other Museum initiatives as time permits. S/he also contributes to grant proposals, helps evaluate programs and resources, and represents the Museum at local educational forums and conferences.

Reports to: School Programs Manager

Work schedule: 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with evening and weekend hours as necessary

Compensation: $36,370–$41,826, plus benefits

Job Requirements

Requirements: The successful candidate for this position must have substantial experience teaching adult and school-aged learners in a museum environment; a demonstrated ability to develop dynamic, inquiry-based gallery experiences, produce educational materials, and implement programs; and a strong background in supervising staff and directing projects. The individual will be a reflective practitioner with a B.A. or B.F.A. in art, education, or a related field; M.A. preferred. Innovative ideas about museum education are essential; familiarity with NYC schools is helpful. The candidate must be creative, well-organized, committed to working as part of a collaborative team and managing group dynamics, and able to meet strict deadlines working on several projects at once.
