The Tsongas Industrial History Center is a collaborative partnership of the University of Massachusetts Lowell Graduate School of Education and the National Park Service at Lowell National Historical Park. The Center encourages the teaching of industrial history and science in a hands-on way through on-and off-site educational programs for students and teachers.
The Center enhances student understanding of the history of Lowell and the Industrial Revolution, specifically the causes and effects of technological change on the production of textiles, on workers, and on the environment.

Duties Include, but are not limited to:
1. Leading effective, curriculum-based education programs comprised of 90-minute hands-on activities and 90-minute tours within Lowell National Historical Park. Responsibilities include the following:
– Clearly communicating program themes and objectives.
– Engaging students at an age-appropriate level.
– Creating a positive and inclusive learning environment.
– Instructing students in the use of such equipment as hand looms, water wheels, and laboratory devices, assisting students as needed.
– Operating equipment (hand and power loom) in order to demonstrate concepts.
– Following designated program schedules, flexibly adapting to schedule changes made to accommodate visitors’ needs.
– Managing groups of students with the assistance of the classroom teacher.
– Participating in program training and professional development (provided).

2. Observing all standard operating procedures for such duties as:
– Inventorying and repairing artifacts as necessary and preparing equipment for use by school groups.
– Putting teaching materials away.
– Opening and closing Park exhibit sites used in school programs.

3. Demonstrating the University’s commitment to customer service and continuous improvement by:
– Ensuring optimum customer service for all internal and external partners in response to all requests for service and information.
– Building effective partnerships with co-workers both throughout and outside the University.

These positions are contingent upon funding.

-Associate’s Degree or at least two years of college coursework in a related field, such as History, Education, Museum Studies, Environmental Studies, or Engineering; Bachelor’s Degree preferred
-Minimum of two years’ experience working with young people (e.g., classroom teacher or aide, after-school program presenter, scout leader, or camp counselor)
-The ability to work effectively with diverse groups
-Fluent in English, with good oral and written communication skills
-Demonstrated presentation skills
-Ability to work 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for onsite programming (extra hours for in-school programming as needed)
-Willingness to present extended-day programs in local schools strongly desired
-Bachelor’s Degree preferred
