The American Museum of Tort Law (AMTL) will be housed in a splendid granite building in Litchfield County’s Winsted, Connecticut, (a two-hour ride from Boston and New York) which is also AMTL founder Ralph Nader’s hometown. The AMTL will contain breathtaking exhibits about the contributions Tort Law has made to improve the health, safety and economic security of people in our country and around the world. The exhibits will also show how Tort Law has sanctioned corporations and individuals who have harmed others. The Museum is vitally important to expand public awareness and appreciation for the unparalleled contributions Tort Law and plaintiffs’ lawyers have made to our society.

The American Museum of Tort Law seeks a Director to provide creative and energetic leadership to launch the first law museum in the United States.

The Director’s responsibilities will include programing of ongoing museum events and special educational activities, fundraising, serving as spokesperson for the AMTL, and conducting a wide variety of community outreach activities.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Build AMTL in-person attendance for permanent exhibits and special events, and develop social media to attract and educate a wider audience;

Increase local, statewide, and national awareness of the importance of Tort Law to society;

Manage volunteers and consultants;

Write grants and solicit contributions from foundations and individuals;

Manage, secure and maintain the property and facilities of the AMTL, as well as the collections held in public trust.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree. Advanced degree preferred, experience in any aspect of the civil justice system would be advantageous;

Ability to develop and implement effective strategies for marketing, fundraising and outreach plans;

Strong writing and public speaking skills a plus;

Proven ability to work well with a Board, staff and volunteers, and in community groups;

Willingness to work a variable schedule, including weekends and evenings when needed.
