Hone Research Fellowship for Museum Engagement [The Dayton Art Institute]

Two Research Fellowships for Museum Engagement are available at The Dayton Art Institute. One fellowship takes place for 8 weeks during the summer of 2015, the second lasts for 14 months. Both fellowships commence June 15, 2015.

These fellowships require research and content development on select objects in the museum’s collection to add to the existing What is a Masterpiece? program, an online interactive tour. Fellows will identify content sources in a variety of media and secure rights for content. Fellows will work with community resources and identify and interview artists and scholars to contribute to the understanding and interpretation of each object.

The 14-month fellow also will update rights permissions, maintain the digital content by working with a vendor, visit community centers and schools whose members would benefit from using this online resource to engage with the museum collection, and orientate the next 14-month fellow.

This project originated with a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. What is A Masterpiece? is one of the first art museum programs of its kind to use a QR code to access a mobile website created specifically for objects in the museum’s collection, allowing access to a menu of diverse content offerings.

The fellows will work directly with the Chief Curator in tandem with the Curator of Education, who serve as supervisors and mentors throughout the term of the fellowship.

Job Requirements

The summer position takes place from June 15 through August 7, 2015.  The 14-month position starts on June 15, 2015.  The work schedule for both positions is 35-hours per week, Monday through Friday. Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree in art history, art education or the humanities; candidates pursuing or with completed graduate degrees in art history or a related field are preferred. Familiarity with object research, making and editing video as well as software to record content (such as Apple iMovie, FinalCutX (or FinalCutPro) or Adobe Premiere), and uploading media from a variety of sources is preferred. Must be well organized, deadline driven, able to work independently with good attention to detail.

The summer stipend amount is $4,500; the 14-month stipend is $24,500.  The Dayton Art Institute stipends are not considered salary or compensation, but are awarded to help support a fellow’s study, research and travel efforts during the tenure of their appointment. Fellows awarded stipends must complete a W-9 and will receive a financial summary at the end of each calendar year.  Fellows are responsible for meeting their own state and federal tax obligations.

For consideration, please submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae or resume, writing sample and four (4) references to The Dayton Art Institute, Attn: Monica Walker, Human Resources Director, 456 Belmonte Park North, Dayton, OH 45405 or email to mwalker@daytonart.org.  EEOC

Applications due May 15, 2015.
