Social Media Intern [Historic Newton, Newton, MA]

Historic Newton is seeking an intern to work with the Community Engagement Manager in the winter/spring of 2018. The intern will create and manage content about special events, including our 2018 Newton House Tour. Familiarity with Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram is required. The ideal candidate will also have basic skills in photography and writing. Interest in history and architecture is a plus. Although we cannot offer financial compensation, this position is a wonderful experience in a non-profit setting and we are happy to provide future recommendations. Paid Tech Studio Intern [Museum of Science, Boston, MA]

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

Tech Studio develops and facilitates staffed programs for visitors introducing them to the engineering design process, computational thinking, and “maker” skills and processes. Through hands-on activities and design challenges, visitors have the opportunity to think like engineers and innovators and explore how their decision-making and values shape the designed world. Tech Studio is the staffed exhibit hub of the Museum’s Blue Wing and engages over 180,000 in technology programming annually.
POSITION SUMMARY:

The Tech Studio Intern will work alongside Tech Studio staff and museum volunteers to facilitate and develop design challenges engineering activities, Try Your Tech circuitry and programming activities, and technology investigations focusing on digital technology and computational thinking.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The intern will interact directly with museum visitors leading design activities in the Engineering Design Workshop and on carts throughout the Gordon Current Science and Technology Center
  • The intern will demonstrate and guide volunteers and teen interns, helping train them in facilitating new activities
  • The intern will become knowledgeable of museum resources available to schools and community educators
  • The intern will work to develop and prototype design activities focusing on a range of topics such as digital media, robotics, circuits and computer programming.
  • The intern will present activities and interpretations introducing technical concepts (engineering, computer science, robotics) to diverse audiences using terms and models appropriate for a lay audience.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated interest and/or background in engineering, science or education.
  • Undergraduate student, graduate student or career changer.
  • Experience working with diverse audiences and ages.
  • Demonstrated comfort introducing technical concepts to diverse audiences and different educational levels.

SPECIAL SKILLS:

    Engineering, computer science or media studies coursework preferred.

LENGTH OF INTERNSHIP:

Winter/Spring 2018 (Janaury-May)
WORK SCHEDULE:

14-28 hours per week.
STARTING SALARY:

Between $11.00 & $11.25 hourly

Development Intern [Discovery Museums, Acton, MA]

The Discovery Museums (Acton, MA) seek a Development Intern to start in early 2018 through mid-May for approximately 15-20 hours per week (schedule and hours flexible). The intern’s primary focus will be on coordinating the Museum’s online auction, which in spring 2017 raised more than $25,000 to support the Museums. The intern will research prospective donors, contact and follow up with donors via mail, e-mail, and phone, and assist with promotion, management, and fulfillment of the auction. In addition to supporting the auction, he/she will assist with the overall annual giving program, cultivation and stewardship events, communications, and research. This is a great opportunity to learn more about fundraising and development operations, areas that are essential to the success of all nonprofit organizations.

Qualifications: 
Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills required.
Computer literate with working knowledge of MS Office, especially Excel.
Interest and enthusiasm to learn about development.
Attention to detail and discretion required.

Decorative Arts Trust Curatorial Internship Grant Application Deadline

The Decorative Arts Trust is now accepting applications for a two-year Curatorial Internship Grant. The Trust’s Internship Grants provide critical employment opportunities for emerging museum professionals at qualified institutions. This is a two-year challenge grant of $17,500 per year. The intern will receive from the Trust an additional $2,500 in funding per year to offset the cost of travel related to research and professional development programs. Potential museum and historical society collaborators should apply by September 30, 2017. The application packet must consist of a formal letter of interest describing the nature of the project(s) in which the intern will be involved during the two-year period and identifying the staff member who will supervise and mentor the intern; a statement of how the institution plans to raise the $35,000 in matching funding over two years; the supervisor’s CV; and pertinent background information related to particular initiatives, exhibitions, or research related to the intern’s planned projects. Images and a draft of a job description are strongly encouraged. Please note that mentorship is a significant consideration in this program. The Trust’s selection will be announced by October 31, with grant funds available as early as January 1, 2018.
