    The Museum:
    The March Field Air Museum is an AAM accredited, 37-year-old aviation museum. It is an
    official Department of Defense museum. The aircraft displayed are on loan from Wright
    Patterson AFB, the National Museum of the Air Force. The Museum is adjacent to the
    historically significant, 99-year-old March Air Reserve Base, the second oldest and 3rd largest
    Air Force base in the nation. The museum site consists of 40 acres, 4 exhibit hangers, a
    Discovery Dome, 25,000 artifacts and 77 aircraft on display.
    Job Description:
    The Executive Director will report to the President of the 35-member March Field Museum
    Foundation’s Board of Directors and provide leadership for the Museum including planning,
    organizing and directing all operational, administrative, financial disciplines, fundraising and
    programmatic aspects of the organization. The Executive Director will be expected to advance
    the Museum’s collections, exhibitions and educational programs. This creative leader will form
    effective external relationships with key local community, government, military and business
    leaders as well as the philanthropic, artistic, historical and educational communities. The ED will
    develop a comprehensive marketing and advertising campaign to increase and maintain the
    public’s attendance and participation. Supervises a staff of nine full-time employees that include
    an Operations Manager (accounting, banking, physical plant, gift shop and liaison with the Board
    of Directors) a Curator, a Collections’ Manager, an Event Coordinator, a Restorations’ Manager
    and over 140 volunteers.

Requirements

Required Skills and Principal Responsibilities:

1.   Exhibits an initiative and independent judgment while operating within the general

policy framework established by the Board of Directors.

2.   Integrity, tact and diplomacy in politically difficult or controversial situations.

3.   Designs, establishes and maintains an organizational structure and staffing, within the

Museum’s adopted budget, to accomplish the organization’s goals and objectives;

recruits, employs, trains, supervises and evaluates staff.

4.   Establishes and implements long and short-range goals, objectives, policies and

operating procedures; monitors and evaluates program effectiveness; effects changes

required for improvement.

5.   Successful experience administering not-for-profit fundraising strategies and grant

production targeted at individual contributors, corporations, public and other private

sources that generate resources and revenue for operating funds and special exhibits.

6.   Plans and directs development and communication of information to government

agencies, funding agencies, students, community stakeholders (e.g. schools, colleges

and universities, tribal organizations and the business community) and the general

public.

7.   Develops the annual operating budget, supervises accounting controls and provides

accurate financial reports to the Board of Directors. Performs periodic cost and

productivity analyses.

8.   Directs and oversees the acquisition and professional management of a broad-based

museum collection and archives; directs the aircraft preservation, research and other

related professional activities.

9.   Oversees and coordinates a wide variety of temporary and permanent exhibitions;

directs and guides all aspects of research, interpretation and collections’ management.

10. Plans and implements marketing strategies for all Museum/Society activities.

11. Performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions:

  • Oversees Museum fiscal matters: prepares annual budget and action plans, determines

and approves expenditures.

  • Directs facility use: oversees safety and security; develops policies and fee structures;

ensures maintenance and appropriate use of the facility.

  • Supervises Museum employees and volunteers.
  • Develops and secures funding through grants, donations, planned giving, special

events and other formal development activities.

  • Educates through tours, public presentations and other opportunities.
  • Reviews and plans Museum exhibits as part of overall public programs.
  • Establishes and maintains networks with other historical societies and museums.
  • Serves as liaison to local and regional historical groups, community partners,

sponsors and as official spokesperson to the media.

  • Ensures that best practices in museum and collection management are maintained.
  • Works with the Board of Directors to direct and implement a strategic plan.
  • Implements directives from the Board of Directors; attends board meetings, collects

and maintains statistics; prepares and distributes reports.

  • Attends workshops, conferences and seminars for professional development.

Minimum Qualifications:

The Executive Director for the March Field Air Museum will have a Bachelor’s Degree, a

Master’s degree is preferred. A minimum of five years of increasing responsibility at a

museum, with the past three years in a senior leadership position. Demonstrated “bottom

line consciousness”, proficiency in fundraising.

In partnership with the Andrew Mellon Foundation, The American Civil War Museum is seeking a ten-month Graduate Research Assistant to support a new interdisciplinary Fellowship initiative that will bridge original public humanities research with exhibition and presentation.

The best public humanities projects are designed with the expectations of an audience in mind. They seek to meet or exceed expectations, complicate visitors’ preconceived ideas, and inspire them to think more deeply about history and about social issues and difficult choices in their own lives.

The Graduate Research Assistant will work in partnership with the brightest emerging Curators and Post-Doctoral Fellows in Civil War history to craft innovative visitor-focused exhibitions which have the potential to transform the views of individual visitors and school groups as well as the way history museums across the country engage the public. The hourly compensation for this position will be $12.50

POSITION PURPOSE:
The Associate Curator promotes The Durham Museum’s mission and vision by ensuring the proper care and security of permanent and temporary exhibitions, professionally presented to our guests. The position functions as a role model for interactions with museum customers and promoting a keen awareness and understanding of the museum’s core values.
ENVIRONMENT:
Housed in Omaha’s historic Union Station, The Durham Museum serves as one of the region’s premier education centers and family destinations. The museum’s exhibitions and education programs explore a wide range of subjects, regional and national, in the fields of history, culture, science, and industry. Key to the museum’s strong emphasis on education is the distance learning program, which links museum visitors, schools, and other venues throughout the region with curriculum developed by our team and our partners nationwide.
The organization was founded in 1974 as the Western Heritage Museum. In 1995, Union Station was renovated as part of a $25 million capital campaign, and in 1997 the museum was renamed in honor of Charles and Margre Durham. In 2002, the museum became an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and has since built relationships with the Library of Congress, National Archives, Chicago’s Field Museum, and other renowned educational resources. In 2007, the museum completed a $1.5 million rejuvenation of its permanent exhibitions and opened the 266-seat Stanley and Dorothy Truhlsen Lecture Hall in the former 1899 boiler plant. Additional restorative work was completed in 2009 to preserve Union Station’s art deco architecture as well as to guarantee the long-term viability and preservation of the facility and the collections housed within its walls.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
The Associate Curator is responsible for the development, installation and upkeep of temporary and permanent exhibitions, and for developing and maintaining an intimate understanding and knowledge of the history of Omaha. The incumbent will work with external customers, responding to questions and concerns about the collection and potential donations. This position participates in conservation needs assessments, exhibition-related staging, installation, and de-installation. The incumbent is responsible for all research, text and label production, object selection, and installation of the scheduled exhibits. In addition, this position is responsible for the care and security of the museum’s permanent exhibitions, which includes monitoring condition of components, cleanliness of the galleries, and facilitating updates to those areas as appropriate. The Associate Curator works closely with other departments to best develop and maintain the exhibits, and prepares and disseminates information relevant to each exhibit to researchers, visitors, and other museum departments. The Associate Curator supervises, mentors, and coaches part-time photo archive associate, interns, and volunteers in the Curatorial department.

Requirements

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Contribute to the organization and interpretation of permanent and temporary exhibits through research, label writing, object selection and preparation, mount fabrication, installation, de-installation, and database maintenance, utilizing accepted historical research and museum practices.
2. Solicit, process, and track incoming and outgoing loans, including location, dates, requirements and ownership, as well as transport artifacts for donation and/or loan pickup and return.
3. Respond to correspondence relating to the museum’s permanent collection, as well as evaluate potential acquisitions/donations and make recommendations to the Curator.
4. Facilitate and supervise access to the museum collection, library, and archive for a wide-range of users, including museum staff, researchers, interns, and the general public.
5. Develop and maintain a comprehensive institutional archive of The Durham Museum, including information/object acquisition, sorting, and generating finding aids.
6. Responsible for the general maintenance, care, and cleaning of the permanent and temporary exhibition galleries and collections storage areas, utilizing full and part-time staff and interns.
7. Work with the Curator in establishing and executing annual departmental goals.
8. Support the museum’s overall strategies and operational activities within the Curatorial, Collections and Archives division.
9. Participate in all mandatory training and safety programs required and provided by the museum.
10. Responsible for working within department and program budgets as approved by the Board of Directors of the museum for all areas of responsibility.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience
1-3 years of professional-level curatorial experience required. Familiarity with PastPerfect museum software desired.
Education

This position requires excellent organizational skills with high attention to detail. The incumbent should have strong research, computer, and administrative skills. The position requires self-discipline and a high level of initiative as a self-starter with limited supervision. Collaboration and interpersonal communication are critical to the success of this leadership role, both with members of the museum team and with external customers. Knowledge of Omaha history preferred.
Working Conditions
Routine periods of sitting, standing, and walking are required. Must be able to climb ladders, lift up to 40 pounds, go up and down stairs, and sit or stand for extended periods.

Associate Registrar [Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, CA]

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is seeking an Associate Registrar for our Research & Collections Department. This position is responsible for supporting the Chief Registrar in the management of the department and in all aspects of collections care and registration, including permanent collections, deaccessions, incoming loans, exhibitions, storage, handling, and movement. Reports to the Chief Registrar, Director of Collections & Research Resources. Acts as department head of the Registrar’s Office in the absence of the Chief Registrar.

Primary responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Incoming Loans: Processes, updates, and maintains the records for incoming loan transactions to the Museum (including insurance documentation, renewal, and returns) in the registrar’s database.
  • Deaccessioning and Transfer of Collection Items: Processes and maintains the records for all collection deaccessions and transfers.
  • Exhibits:  May work on multiple exhibits simultaneously; budgeting for exhibits; manages accurate crate and object lists; coordinates logistics with Museum staff and outside parties; makes arrangements with shippers and packers; oversees freight loading/unloading, installation/deinstallation, and storage of exhibits; condition reports internal and external loans. Drafts customized individual lender contracts for exhibits produced by Museum.
  • Collections Support:  Assists the Research & Collections department as needed in obtaining quotes, establishing budgets, and coordinating and overseeing installation/deinstallation of collections and loans, packing, movement/relocation, and storage of collection specimens and artifacts.
  • Represents Chief Registrar:  Serves as representative of the Registrar’s Office in the absence of the Chief Registrar. Attends curatorial, administrative, planning or other meetings to discuss and advise on registration matters, as needed.
Requirements
  • Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, anthropology, history, biological sciences, art/art history, information management, or a related field.
  • At least five to seven years of full-time paid employment experience as a museum registrar in a natural history museum and/or art museum with object-handling expertise and a strong knowledge of current practices and standards in museum registration, accessions, deaccessions, loans, fine arts insurance and risk management, contracts, exhibition procedures, packing/crating, domestic and international shipping, and international regulations including Fish and Wildlife/CITES.
  • Possess strong organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple activities and effectively set priorities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Exercise sound judgment and discretion in the handling of confidential matters.
  • Demonstrates strong computer skills, with a proficiency in word-processing, spreadsheet, database (KE-EMu preferred), and/or other type of software applications.
