Manager of Public Education [Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University]

The Manager of Public Education is responsible for the design and implementation of the museum’s education programs for the general public. Also performs the duties of either the Educator for Adult and Community Programs or the Educator for K-12 and Family Programs (described below).

Supervises the Educator for Adult/Community Programs or the Educator for K-12/Family Programs position as well as Gallery Guides, interns, and volunteers. This position reports directly to the Head of Education and Interpretation.

Work Performed :

Supervises the hiring, training, and evaluation of part-time Gallery Guide staff to give tours and engage with museum visitors. Gallery Guides include a mix of community members and university students.

Creates and manages budget for Public (K-12/Family and Adult/Community) education programs.

Manages and evaluates Duke Student interns and volunteers working in the department.

Reviews interpretive materials, such as wall text, explanatory labels, and museum publications,

Before distribution to the public.

Performs other related duties as required.

Educator for K-12 and Family Programs

  • Develops and implements educational programs for the museum’s K-12 students  including tours, materials, gallery activities, and teacher training
  • Develops and implements educational programs for the museum’s family audiences, including Family Day events and Summer Make & Take programs
  • Promotes K-12 and family programs in the community
  • Trains Gallery Guides on K-12 tours and best practices for student and family audiences
  • Assists with supervision of Gallery Guide staff, as well as Duke student interns, and volunteers
  • Oversees the logistical coordination of the museum’s school visits
  • Manages the budget for K-12 and Family education programs

Educator for Adult and Community Programs

  • Develops and implements educational programs relating to the museum’s collections and exhibitions for the  museum’s adult and community audiences, including tours, materials, gallery activities, and teacher training
  • Develops and implements the Reflections  Alzheimer’s project and Art with the Experts program at local libraries
  • Promotes adult and community programs
  • Trains Gallery Guides on best practices for adult and general public tours and adult audiences
  • Assists with supervision of Gallery Guides, as well as Duke student interns, and volunteers
  • Manages the budget for Adult and Community education programs

Required Qualifications

Bachelor Degree in art history, museum education, or related field, or equivalent experience. 5-7 years’ experience in museum education.

Excellent writing, communications, and project management skills. Strong people skills and the ability to manage and motivate others. Ability to work well with others, ability to manage projects independently, and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Visitor Services Coordinator [Duxbury Rural and Historical Society]

The Duxbury Rural and Historical Society (DRHS) seeks a part-time, summer employee to serve as Visitor Services Coordinator for its historic houses. The Visitor Services Coordinator is responsible for daily activity at the King Caesar House (1809) and the Bradford House (1808) as it pertains to providing a positive experience for visitors. This position reports directly to the Curator, and involves extensive communication with the public, with office staff, and with volunteer docents. Duties include, but are not limited to: opening and closing the museums according to protocol; basic housekeeping; greeting the public; running the introductory video presentation; handling ticket and book sales; offering tours as required; supervising small, private rental activity on adjacent park land. The required hours are Thursdays (9:45-2:30), Fridays (9:45-4:30) and Saturdays (9:45-4:30), from June 27-August 31; preference will be given to applicants who can accommodate an additional hour before or after their house schedule, to accommodate rental activity. The successful applicant is also expected to attend several hours of paid training sessions scheduled before opening date, on June 11 and 12th. Requirements: some college education or equivalent work experience; experience working with the public or customer relations; reliable transportation to work and between buildings; comfort working within a historic house environment. Preferred qualifications: familiarity with Duxbury and its history; some education in history/museum studies, or related field; experience in a museum or visitor services setting. Volunteer Guide Coordinator and Site Manager for the Jeremiah Lee Mansion [Marblehead Museum]

The Marblehead Museum is a private, non-profit museum located in Marblehead’s historic district. The Museum’s mission is to preserve, protect and promote Marblehead’s unique history. One of the Museum’s three properties, the Jeremiah Lee Mansion is an outstanding example of colonial Georgian architecture. It is open for guided tours from June through October. The Volunteer Guide Coordinator and Site Manager schedules and supervises over 40 volunteer guides, providing training and enrichment. The Site Manager coordinates outside cleaning help, supports garden club volunteers and assists with events in the Lee Mansion. The Site Manager is knowledgeable about principles and practices of historic interpretation, as well as facility management. Able to communicate effectively orally and in writing. The Site manager reports to the Museum Director and is supported by a professional staff. The successful candidate will have education and experience equivalent to a Bachelors degree in history, museum education or a closely related field, and experience in museum or historic site interpretation and management. The position is part time and seasonal, 20 hours per week May 15-November 15, including Saturdays. Some off season hours possible. Museum Tour Guide [The Gibson House Museum]

The Gibson House Museum is currently looking for part-time guides. Candidates should feel comfortable with public speaking and have a strong interest in history, architecture, or decorative arts. The Museum is open Wed.- Sun. and tours are offered at 1:00, 2:00, and 3:00 p.m. Guide schedules are flexible. Located in Boston’s Back Bay, the Gibson House Museum is a time capsule of daily life during the mid-nineteenth to early twentieth centuries, reflecting three generations of Gibson family occupancy (1859–1954). Since 1957, it has been operated as a house museum, displaying four floors of Victorian and Edwardian decorative arts. The Gibson House is a National Historic Landmark and is registered on the Massachusetts State Register of Historic Places. The position pays $35/day. Hours are 12:30-4:15. Director of Education and Public Programs [Cape Ann Museum]

The Director of Education and Public Programs oversees the development and implementation of public programs offered in accordance with the Museum’s mission and in conjunction with the Museum collections.
