Director of Curatorial Services [Museum of History & Industry]

DESCRIPTION and SCOPE: Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI) is seeking a Director of Curatorial Services to serve as the chief of curatorial and interpretive programs, responsible for the development and execution of an integrated strategy for MOHAI collections, exhibits, and public and education programs. The Director will be responsible for the coordinated growth of these areas as MOHAI expands operations in its new home, and will be the lead staff responsible for the coordination of the museum’s content, programming and collections initiatives. A special responsibility will be to serve as the lead curator for the Bezos Center for Innovation. To accomplish these duties, the Director will oversee a staff that currently numbers 20 museum professionals in exhibits, collections, library, public programs, and education, with supervisory responsibilities for six managers.

The Director of Curatorial Services is a newly established position at MOHAI. The Director will report to the Executive Director and will serve with the Executive Director, Director of Finance & Administrative Services, Director of Marketing & Communications, Director of Development, and Executive Assistant to form the executive management team for MOHAI.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

LEAD DUTIES:

Lead Curatorial Planning: Working with department personnel and museum leadership, leads the development and implementation of an integrated curatorial and interpretive plan for the museum’s exhibits, collections, and education and public programs, including the Bezos Center for Innovation.
Management: Lead management of a team of 20 museum professionals in the areas of exhibits, programs, education, and collections at two sites (Lake Union and Georgetown), including six direct managerial reports (see below).
Executive Team: Serves as a member of the executive management team, and works collaboratively with the Executive Director, Director of Finance and Operations, Director of Development, Director of Marketing and Communications and Executive Assistant to ensure effective and coordinated implementation of museum plans.
Budgeting: Develops and manages the curatorial services operating and personnel (non-capital) budget, currently approximately $1.6 million.
Community Relations: Serves as lead spokesperson for the mission and purpose of MOHAI curatorial and interpretive programs.
OVERSIGHT DUTIES:

Collections Management: Supervise collection and library managers.
Exhibit Planning: Supervise exhibit manager.
Educational and Program Initiatives: Supervise program and education managers.

Job Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Experience: At least five years senior curatorial experience at a history museum or equivalent facility, including demonstrated success in creating and executing exhibits, managing collections, and developing public and education programs. Up to three years of hands-on experience successfully leading, managing and growing a diverse professional staff. Substantial experience in effectively managing large budgets and success in completing complex long-term projects.
Education: Master of Arts in history, museum studies or a related field with demonstrated excellent writing and communication skills.

Community Folk Art Center, Inc. (CFAC) at Syracuse University is seeking to hire a full–time curator. CFAC is a multidisciplinary art center featuring three galleries, dance studio, ceramics studio classrooms, Visual Arts Room, 2D room and a Community Black Box Theater located in the heart of the Connective Corridor in Syracuse, New York. Past CFAC exhibitions have featured the art of Elizabeth Catlett, Faith Ringgold, AfriCobra, Amos Kennedy as well as work representing, Asian, Latino and Islamic art and culture. As the community service based unit of the Department of African American Studies, CFAC is seeking to hire an innovative curator who can expand our efforts to showcase art by emerging, mid-career and accomplished artists from the African Diaspora and diverse communities whose work engages the communities CFAC serves (locally, regionally, nationally and internationally).
The successful candidate must possess an MA or MFA and five years of curatorial experience, beyond the degree and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Database management and computer experience (with emphasis on Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite) is required and must have experience in working with artists who utilize a variety of media including 2D, 3D, new media and emerging technologies. She/he will also have strong interpersonal and written communication skills as well as experience working with diverse communities.
The curator will be responsible for all aspects of the exhibitions beginning with identifying potential artists through de-installation. Additionally, the curator is responsible for updating and implementing our collections management procedures including an online database. The curator will also be responsible for designing and implementing public and community programs, in consultation with the Director of Education as well as create pre and post visit materials for gallery tours and on-site school visits, exhibition catalogs and postcards. Associate Curator of European Art, 1850-1950 [Detroit Institute of Arts]

GENERAL SUMMARY

The DIA seeks an Associate Curator to serve as a full-time member of the European Art Department (EAD). The candidate must have expertise in Modern European Painting and general knowledge of Modern European Sculpture and Decorative Arts. The Detroit Institute of Arts’ Modern European collection includes such historically significant works as Vincent van Gogh’s Self-Portrait (1887) and Henri Matisse’s The Window (1916), the first paintings by these artists to enter a U.S. museum.

Under the supervision of the Head of EAD, the Associate Curator will oversee all aspects of the collection of Modern European Art, including paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts from 1850 to 1950. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, organizing special loan exhibitions; researching Nazi-era provenance of artworks; overseeing permanent gallery installations; recommending new works for acquisition; and co-leading and assisting with the DIA’s European Paintings Council (EPC), one of the department’s two auxiliary groups.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Compile information pertinent to the identification, documentation, or authentication of works of art and maintain appropriate object records in accordance with DIA data and archival standards;
Maintain current knowledge of the art market in order to recommend objects for the permanent collection and develop acquisition proposals;
Conduct original research on the museum’s art collection and publish in scholarly journals, catalogues, and books;
Collaborate with the Collections Management staff in installing artworks that fall under the purview of his/her curatorial department;
Work in close collaboration with the Conservation Department to regularly assess the conservation needs of the collection;
Develop familiarity with the DIA’s Collections Management Policy and assist the Registrar’s Department in producing supporting documentation for accessioning and deaccessioning works of art;
Participate in training to facilitate courier trips and serve as a designated museum courier when necessary;
With guidance from head of EAD, work collaboratively with educators in the Learning and Interpretation Division to develop and produce interpretive strategies and accompanying materials for permanent gallery projects and special exhibitions, as well as conduct training for gallery teachers and docents to support DIA’s school and related programs;
Participate in the day-to-day administration of the department, which includes responding to scholarly and public inquiries related to the collection;
Act as staff liaison to the EPC and assist with organizing its activities and programs;
Develop enrichments, including presentations and tours for members and museum visitors, to facilitate community outreach;
Foster and maintain good working relationships with existing and potential patrons, trustees, and museum colleagues across the country and abroad, as well as with the academic community, art dealers, and collectors;
Work effectively with various museum departments to ensure that content related to the art under his/her purview is accurately conveyed and represented in all museum print publications and other media;
Represent the museum in professional societies and at symposia and other scholarly meetings and events.

Ph.D. in Art History preferred, with specialization in Modern European Art;

The University of Missouri Museum of Art & Archaeology seeks an exceptional curator to interpret and develop its important collection of European and American art. The Museum’s holdings in this area are one of its acknowledged strengths, and include a Samuel H. Kress Collection of Italian paintings dating to the 15th-18th centuries, as well as broader collections of European and American paintings, prints, drawings and other media, including a growing collection of Regionalist and Americanist works from the 19th to 21st centuries.

Reporting to the Director, the Associate Curator for European and American Art has broad responsibilities for the interpretation, development and management of the Museum’s collections, as well as the organization of exhibitions, selection of objects for display or interpretation, preparation of catalogues and catalogue entries, recommendation of objects for acquisition, and conducting substantive research on the collections or within his/her area of specialty. The successful candidate may also be appointed to the University graduate and doctoral faculty.
