Educational Specialist [Powerhouse Science Center, Sacramento, CA]

A non-exempt, full-time position, eligible for benefits.

40 Hours per week.

Calling all lovers of all things science related. If you are interested in sharing your passions with kids of all ages the Powerhouse Science Center is looking for you. We are seeking an educator to join us in our mission of conducting informal educational programs in and out of the building. The Educational Specialist is accountable to the Educational Program Manager.

Powerhouse Science Center has served the Sacramento region for 60 years as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency, providing an informal hands-on educational experience for children, families and school groups in 19 counties. We are in transition to become a world-class science center for all ages – and will be relocating to the historic PG&E Powerhouse building along the Sacramento River north in downtown in a few short years. This is a unique opportunity for a passionate informal educator interested in joining our growing team.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Educational Specialist will conduct school programs and assist with program set up and maintenance together with other related duties as needed. The Educational Specialist leads the on-site program instruction for school groups and resets the classroom and outdoor simulation excavation site after each program.

The Education Specialist is responsible for but not limited to:

  •  Delivering Challenger center school missions
  • Delivering planetarium presentations as needed
  • Assisting in planning and implementing laboratory based programs
  • Conducting archaeology school program
  • Program reset and maintenance of all associated programming
  • Organization and upkeep of program materials

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Interest and understanding of a wide variety of scientific disciplines including Astronomy, Physical and Space Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Engineering.
  • Experience within the museum or educational fields.
  • Experience working with the public, school groups and volunteers of all ages.
  • Excellent written communication, customer service, public speaking, and listening skills.
  • Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Art degree in Science, Education, or Museum Studies or equivalent knowledge or experience.
  • At least one year working with children in an educational setting
  • Willingness to work weekend days regularly plus some evenings and holidays.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Lift 60 pounds
  • Use shovel, rake, other outdoor tools and move loaded wheelbarrows
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Communicate effective, both orally and in written form
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with Science Center employees, community members and volunteers
  • Work a flexible schedule which may include weekends, occasional holidays, and evenings

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid California Driver’s License
  • Vehicle with Proof of Insurance
  • Current Tetanus vaccination required
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel, Publisher
  • Familiarity with general office equipment and procedures

Coordinator of Family and Community Programs [Denver Art Museum, Denver, CO]

The Learning and Engagement team at the Denver Art Museum is looking for an individual to coordinate the current and future live programming for family visitors inspired by the Denver Art Museum’s permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate live programs, including: Create-n-Takes, Family Museum Theater, Create Playdate, Foxy and Shmoxy: Art Detectives, Cuentos, Break Weeks, all Classes for Kids, intergenerational programming, and purchased art experiences
  • Maintain Tuesday to Saturday work schedule to coordinate weekend programming, including support of Program Facilitators and interns
  • Work with Studio and Artists Programs to schedule all trainings and shifts of Program Facilitators and co-coordinate monthly trainings
  • Coordinate intern team, including hiring, scheduling, and trainings with Coordinator of Family and Community Programs
  • Coordinate weekly volunteer family program prep days, including scheduling and training
  • Contribute to all family collateral pieces
  • Support installed programs, including keeping all Learning and Engagement spaces stocked, maintained, and tidy when needed
  • Work with Manager of Family and Community programs to support the development and take on eventual coordination of future programming for families in the revitalized North building (including all kids break week and day classes, intergenerational programming, and purchased art experiences)
  • Interface with Events, Security and Facilities, Visitor Services, Communications, and Exhibition departments to ensure implementation of family programs.
  • Support on formal and informal evaluation studies of current and future programs to gather feedback from artists, visitors, and community.
  • Work with Manager to implement budget across program areas including maintaining supply inventory and budget
  • Work collaboratively across the Learning and Engagement department to deliver superior visitor experiences:
    • Support supervision of Break Week programming in collaboration with Studio and Artists programs
    • Supervise interns, including task delegation, scheduling and trainings
    • Represent Family and Community programs at frontline meetings
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

Education or Formal Training

Experience

  • 2-3 years working in a museum environment
  • Experience working with a variety of museum audiences, some experiences with family audiences necessary
  • Experience with evaluation

Historic Site Educators [Kings Chapel, Boston, MA]

Description:
King’s Chapel seeks Historic Site Educators to join our enthusiastic interpretation team.Educators serve as the public face of King’s Chapel, welcoming and engaging 300,000 visitors to the historic building each year. Educators engage the public through leading guided tours and educational programs, providing historical information and talks, and maintaining a friendly, helpful demeanor for all guests. Educators are also responsible for welcoming visitors to the Freedom Trail site and encouraging them to support our 18th-Century historic church through donations.

Staff are encouraged to assist in developing or expanding multi-generational programming under the supervision of the Program Director and Head Educator.

Our interpretation spans over 300 years of history, with an emphasis on the roles of religion, tolerance, and justice in the formation of the United States.

Programming themes vary from death and burial practices in early America to the complex narrative of religious freedom and tolerance in the United States to King’s Chapel’s place in revolutionary Boston to the role and lasting legacy of the slavery and the Atlantic slave trade in the formation of not only King’s Chapel but the United States.

On a typical day, educators…

  • Lead visitors on our most popular program, the Bells & Bones tour, a guided tour of the church’s 18th-century crypt and bell tower.
  • Interpret the site’s history through guided tours, gallery talks, and informal interpretative conversations for our diverse, global visitorship
  • Welcome and greet visitors and school groups to our historic church
  • Foster a positive, safe, and inclusive learning environment for all visitors.
  • Handle merchandise transactions and encourage visitors to support the historic site through donations

In addition to engaging the public, educators are responsible for opening and closing the building, handling End-of-Day procedures related to and taking appropriate steps to ensure the safety and security of all people and objects within the church.

This is a seasonal position (April through October 31) with the possibility of extension.

Schedule includes weekdays and weekends.

Flexible schedule required with availability during holidays, school vacation weeks, evenings and weekends. Educators typically work 2-4 days a week.

Qualifications:

  • Applicants should have graduated from or be enrolled in a BA program in History, Archaeology, Religion, Art History, Museum Studies, or a related field
  • Some education or museum experience preferred

  • Friendly, positive attitude and a passion for working with the public
