Interim Director and Curator [Lamont Gallery, Exeter, NH]

The Lamont Gallery at Phillips Exeter Academy seeks an interim director and curator as a 12-month leave replacement. The interim director and curator will provide leadership and administration of the gallery’s current offerings, oversee and enhance scheduled and tentative programs, and contribute to or develop other curatorial and cultural programs. The interim should have extensive experience in arts and cultural production, a broad, multidisciplinary perspective on arts education and knowledge of teaching, experience with managing staff, operations, budgets, and facilities, a commitment to collaboration, and the ability to work with a diverse constituency.

The Lamont Gallery, located in the Frederick R. Mayer Art Center, is a dynamic exhibition and teaching space that showcases the work of regional, national, and international artists in thematic exhibitions and related programs. Classes from Phillips Exeter Academy, groups from other schools and organizations, and visitors of all ages are welcome to experience and learn about the arts in an intimate setting. Preventive Care Assistant [Historic New England, North Shore, MA]

Description: Historic New England is looking to connect individuals who are new to or interested in the museum field with a hands-on, immersive collections care position working in our historic house museums. Be our “eyes in the field” while you gain invaluable experience in collections handling and preventive care. This opportunity can give you an edge in the competitive museum-field job market.

Responsibilities: This hourly position will be in charge of weekly preventive care tasks including but not limited to dusting objects, vacuuming delicate textiles, vacuuming and dusting historic woodwork and surfaces, and searching for museum pests. Specialty training workshops will be provided by Historic New England’s collection services team, giving you access to the depth of knowledge our staff can provide.

Qualifications: Applicants should have an interest in history and working with museum objects. Experience with handling museum collections is preferred. Must commit to employment through the end of the 2018 season, May through October. Valid driver’s license and a means of transportation required. As typically performed, this position regularly involves talking, hearing, sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending/stooping, and driving. The position also involves lifting up to forty pounds and the ability to handle, lift, and move furniture and other decorative arts objects.

The Director of The Met is responsible for the artistic vision and leadership of the Museum made visible through the work of the 32 departments currently reporting to the Director: 17 Curatorial departments, five Conservation departments, Scientific Research, the 900,000-volume Thomas J. Watson Library, the Antonio Ratti Textile Center, Exhibitions, Education, Digital, Publications and Editorial, Imaging, the Registrar, and Design. The Director oversees The Met’s program of 45 to 55 exhibitions and 30 print and digital publications a year, its research fellowship program, and its education and public programs that reach approximately 750,000 students, teachers, and other visitors each year in support of the Museum’s commitment to audience engagement. The Director also leads The Met’s acquisition program, managing endowed acquisition funds that generate approximately $26 million annually, in addition to the objects patrons give and bequeath.

The Director reports to and works in partnership with the President and Chief Executive Officer. Responsible for the Museum’s administrative functions, the President oversees Institutional Advancement, Membership, Technology and Information Services, Human Resources, Merchandising, Communications, Marketing, Government Relations, Legal Affairs, and Finance, as well as Facilities Management, Security, and Construction. The President and Director together develop strategic plans with the Board of Trustees, raise funds, represent The Met externally, and ensure the well-being of the institution on a day-to-day basis.

The Director and the President answer to a Board of 40 elected Trustees and are subject to the general supervision of the Chairman of the Board. In addition, there are five city Ex Officio Trustees, 30 Trustees Emeriti , and 25 Honorary Trustees. The Met Trustees are deeply invested and have been extraordinarily generous. Both the Director and the President serve as Ex Officio members of the Board and of all its committees, engaging almost daily with their Board colleagues.

THE POSITION: Responsibilities and Priorities 

The Director of The Met will be a skilled and distinguished leader in the field with the demonstrated ability to develop and implement a vision that looks forward, advances The Met’s mission, and inspires supporters, staff, and the public. In addition to the professional responsibilities incumbent upon any art museum director, The Met has the following key priorities for its Director:

  • Be a strong and collaborative partner with the President; build relationships up and down the organization and establish credibility as the Museum’s artistic leader;
  • Develop a vision that advances The Met’s commitment to excellence, leadership, and innovation in the field; model and encourage internally, locally, nationally, and internationally collaborations that underscore the unique power of The Met;
  • Embody a passion for art and for The Met; serve as a visible spokesperson for the Museum with stakeholders, the media, and the public; be an active principal in The Met’s ambitious and highly effective fundraising programs;
  • Hire, oversee, motivate, and mentor a highly skilled professional staff, building bench strength for the future;
  • Focus on effective decision-making in areas including exhibitions, education programs, digital media, capital priorities, and organizational structure;
  • In collaboration with the President, Trustees, and staff, help shape and support The Met’s commitment to Modern and Contemporary Art, including plans for The Met Breuer and the Southwest Wing.


The Person: Characteristics and Qualifications 

The Director will be a tested executive who will:

  • Possess a highly developed “EQ” to ensure successful relationship building, fundraising, advocacy, communication, and team building in short, leadership;
  • Be an engaged listener with the ability to build consensus both within the Museum and beyond;
  • Be a compelling spokesperson adept at inspiring widely divergent audiences;
  • Understand fiscal and operational constraints in order to be a persuasive partner with the President and advocate in the context of competing priorities;
  • Be bold; innovative; self-confident; resilient; decisive; and deeply thoughtful while focusing on the greater good for The Met.

Conservation Technician [Cambridge Arts Council, Cambridge, MA]

CONSERVATION TECHNICIAN POSITION: Outdoor Contemporary Public Art

The Cambridge Arts Council is looking for a conservation technician to assist with the
annual documentation, maintenance, and treatment of its outdoor sculpture and murals
collection. The technician will be working with a team of 2 experienced technicians, the
staff Registrar/Collections Care Specialist, and the Director of Art Conservation for 3
days per week beginning May 14 and ending June 14. The work will include washing and
waxing bronzes, assessment and minor treatment of public art in schools and libraries,
and cleaning mosaics and painted steel sculptures. The work will also include artist
interviews about materials and processes. Some experience with conservation
treatment or collection care is desirable, ability to work all day outdoors needed, good
energy and a sense of humor required. Knowledge of photography is helpful. This is a
great opportunity for a pre-program conservation student or for an emerging artist
interested in learning more about public art.
$18 – $24 hour depending on experience.

Summer Internships in South Africa

Spend your summer participating in the art scene in South Africa via part study-part internship program. 
Description: Students in this small study & internship program spend 3 weeks visiting museums and community centers, talking with artists, making art, and meeting people in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Once they settle in Cape Town they work in a museum for a 5 week internship while soaking up the city’s art scene.
Dates: Mid-June to early August
– one pre-travel week of instruction via Google Hangout
– 3 weeks of experiential learning in Johannesburg and Cape Town (with a two-day side trip to Kruger National Park)
– 5 week internship in a major museum or cultural heritage organization in Cape Town
Credits: Minimum of 7 undergrad or graduate credits in art, cultural studies, museum studies, or independent studies. Includes a 5-week internship. If interested, participants can complete seven of the requisite 15 credits needed to obtain a transcriptable Museum Studies specialization.
Eligibility: MSU and non-MSU undergraduates or graduate students or continuing education students. All are welcome.
