Chief of Education The National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath)

The National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) is a growing institution that provides insight into the evolving, creative, human, and aesthetic nature of mathematics to a diverse audience of all ages. Its interactive exhibits and stimulating programs encourage inquiry, spark curiosity, and reveal the wonders of math.

MoMath is seeking an enthusiastic and energetic Chief of Education who will have primary responsibility for implementation and delivery of the broad variety of innovative and engaging educational programs the Museum offers. This position will help shape one of America’s major efforts in mathematical outreach to students, teachers, and the public.

This is a full-time, permanent position based in New York City. It offers a full suite of benefits.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Chief of Education will supervise and lead the offering of compelling original classes, presentations, and activities that demonstrate the beauty and joy of math. This role is responsible for ensuring that MoMath’s programs, which encompass a broad area of mathematical content, are presented as appealing, compelling programs that are accessible to diverse target audiences, including children and adults, and ranging from mathematical novices to the mathematically sophisticated.

The Chief of Education will serve as the Museum’s lead educator, presenting programs and classroom sessions. He/she will also serve as the manager of MoMath’s education staff, providing guidance and feedback to develop the effectiveness of the educators, supervising and scheduling their work, and deploying appropriate staff and other resources to create successful programs.

MoMath’s educational programs include (but are not limited to):

  • Field trip offerings for school classes, camps, and other groups that visit the Museum
  • After-school and weekend math clubs and gifted/enrichment programs
  • Summer math camps and programs
  • Teacher professional development
  • In-museum public demonstrations and group activities
  • Birthday party activities with a strong mathematical component
  • Mobile museum curricula, including educational outreach to external venues such as schools, community centers, and public spaces
Qualifications:
  • Advanced study at the level of a Ph.D. in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or a closely allied field, or a near-equivalent level of experience, exposure, and mastery of a wide range of mathematical topics
  • A successful track record presenting curricula, activities, and/or programs illustrating the breadth, beauty, vitality, usefulness, and excitement of modern mathematics, geared to a broad public
  • A talent for communicating mathematical ideas at all levels of sophistication and understanding to both children and adults in a clear, meaningful, and accessible manner
  • Experience teaching Mathematics, particularly K-12
  • Strong management, supervisory, and administrative skills; a history of success in a management or supervisory role is highly desirable
  • The ability to provide an enthusiastic, energetic presence in front of a classroom or auditorium
  • Excellent written communication skills

MEMBERSHIP AND DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR – CONCORD MUSEUM

Summary:

The Concord Museum seeks a full-time Membership and Development Coordinator who will be a critical member of the Museum’s development team. The Concord Museum is in the midst of a major building project and capital campaign to engage new and broader audiences with Concord’s history and the extensive collections of the Museum. Reporting to the Director of Development, the Membership and Development Coordinator will join the Museum at this exciting time and be responsible for building member programming and engagement and events that further the Museum’s mission. The ideal candidate will be a flexible multi-tasker who thrives in a fast-paced team environment and can represent the Museum well with a variety of constituents.

Principal Responsibilities:

Lead the Museum’s membership program
• Responsible for developing and maintaining a growing general membership
• Establish, meet, and when possible exceed membership goals
• Lead research, cultivation, and stewardship of members; develop and execute strategies for new member recruitment and retention
• Manage membership recruitment and renewal plan and schedule; administer all aspects of the membership program
• Responsible for timely processing of membership gifts, reports, and acknowledgments

Manage special events
• Plan, manage, and provide on-site support for special events such as exhibition openings and member, cultivation, and stewardship events
• Work with volunteers and staff to plan, execute, and evaluate fundraising events
• Supervise modest function rental program; act as main point of contact for rental inquires

Support major fundraising activities of the Museum
• Research potential donors and work with Development team to generate support from individuals, corporations, and foundations
• Support capital campaign efforts, including donor recognition and stewardship
• Support Museum’s marketing and communications strategy
• Provide additional support for the department, as needed

Qualifications:
– Passion for the Concord Museum’s mission
– Proven success in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment
– Experience in program areas, including membership and events, required
– Ability to build relationships and effectively relate to a range of constituencies
– Detail-oriented and outstanding oral, written, and interpersonal skills
– A professional and resourceful style; the ability to work both independently and as a team player, to take initiative, and to manage multiple projects at a time
– High integrity and sound judgment
– Bachelor’s Degree required
– Excellent computer skills and experience with a fundraising database, preferably Abila Fundraising 50, required; design skills and experience with InDesign a plus
– Willingness to work weekends and evenings, as required

Development Intern [Discovery Museums, Acton, MA]

The Discovery Museums (Acton, MA) seek a Development Intern to start in early 2018 through mid-May for approximately 15-20 hours per week (schedule and hours flexible). The intern’s primary focus will be on coordinating the Museum’s online auction, which in spring 2017 raised more than $25,000 to support the Museums. The intern will research prospective donors, contact and follow up with donors via mail, e-mail, and phone, and assist with promotion, management, and fulfillment of the auction. In addition to supporting the auction, he/she will assist with the overall annual giving program, cultivation and stewardship events, communications, and research. This is a great opportunity to learn more about fundraising and development operations, areas that are essential to the success of all nonprofit organizations.

Qualifications: 
Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills required.
Computer literate with working knowledge of MS Office, especially Excel.
Interest and enthusiasm to learn about development.

Coordinator of School and Educator Programs [Whitney Museum, NYC]

Position Description:
A full-time position is available in the Education Department as the Coordinator of School and Educator Programs at the Whitney Museum. Responsibilities for this position include:
– Organizing and coordinating all aspects of Guided Visit and Guided Visit + Studio Programs for Kindergarten through Twelfth Grade students.
– Organizing and coordinating 9 long-term School Partnerships with New York City schools.
– The hiring, training, oversight, and evaluation of a large team of freelance Museum Educators.
– Organizing programs or art workshops with Whitney artists for students and teachers.
– Supervision and training of an assistant and interns.
– Leading inquiry-based tours for students and teachers.
– Working with the Museum’s Group Services Department on the oversight and management of school group scheduling.
– Creating and managing budgets for current and future School and Educator programming.
– Coordination of all Educator Programs, including the development and implementation of Teacher Exchange, professional development workshops for Partnership and Neighborhood Friends Schools as well as with the NYC Department of Education, Summer Institutes, Educator Exhibition Previews.
– Creation and implementation of substantive evaluation projects.
– Creating and implementing an outreach plan for NYC schools, with a particular focus on art teachers.
– Development and management of online curricular materials such as Educator Guides.
– Maintaining statistics, records, and documentation of programs.
– Writing grants and grant reports and working on the NYC DOE schools contract.
– Meeting and communicating with foundations and donors.
– Contributing to the museum community through publications and conference presentations.
– Working across the Education Department on other collaborative projects such as artist residencies, outreach initiatives, or evaluation projects.
Qualifications:
Requirements:
– B.A., M.A, preferred;
– background in art history, art education and/or museum education;
– 3-5 years professional experience, including work with New York City K-12 students, teachers and administrators;
– strong organizational and communication skills; experience with program research and evaluation.
Museum, administrative, and managerial experience are also required. It is important that the candidate have sound knowledge of educational and developmental theory as well as significant teaching experience. They should be flexible and will be able to work well as part of the School, Youth, and Family Programs team and should be familiar with contemporary art and artists’ practice.
