Shelburne Museum, a spectacular collection of fine art, folk art, and Americana housed within 39 buildings on a beautifully landscaped 45 acre campus in Shelburne Vermont, is seeking a new Marketing and Communications Manager. This important position is responsible for developing the Museum’s broad marketing strategy and implementing plans using both traditional and digital marketing to increase Museum visibility and vistorship locally, nationally, and internationally. The incumbent will conduct market data analysis and evaluation to determine effectiveness of marketing strategy and adjust when necessary. This is a collaborative position and requires the ability to work with multiple departments and a variety of stakeholders while serving as project coordinator for all marketing collateral, products and promotions, seeing that schedules are set and deadlines maintained. Canterbury Shaker Village seeks an interim director to oversee operations while it conducts a search for a permanent executive director. This is a 30-40 hour per week (approximately 6-10 month) contract position, preferably starting by mid-December. Incorporated as a museum in 1969 by the last living Shakers in New Hampshire, Canterbury Shaker Village is a 694-acre National Historic Landmark with 25 restored Shaker buildings that hold collections of national significance. While open seasonally (http://www.shakers.org/), important activities continue throughout the winter and need to be overseen on site. A versatile ten-member staff is supplemented by contracted services and volunteers. Qualifying applicants will demonstrate: at least 10 years organizational management experience, preferably in museums or similar institutions having significant collections and multiple facilities; effective staff administration, team building, and support of program planning and operations; ability to oversee day to day business, financial, and facilities management systems working with functional managers and contracted services; excellent oral and written communications skills; experience working with organizational boards, committees, and volunteers; experience in systems for institutional advancement, donor cultivation and grant management; sufficient education and experience in the humanities to support the Museum’s program staff and advance CSV’s mission. The Exhibit & Facilities Technician ensures that all exhibit components and environments are clean, safe, in good working order, well cared for and repaired in a safe, timely, and aesthetically functional way. The Exhibits and Facilities Technician responds to daily cleaning and maintenance needs of exhibits and the museum grounds. This is a physically active role that requires a combination of technical expertise in woodworking, painting, electro-mechanical systems, metalwork, artistry, and general fabrication. Good communication, problem solving, multitasking, judgment, patience, flexibility, and a sense of humor are essential in this role. The Exhibit & Facilities Technician supports building operations, coordinates the maintenance of technical and janitorial contractors, and works closely with all administrative departments to address satisfaction issues and personify a cohesive organizational voice.
Experience/Qualifications
- Proficiency with basic hand and power tools
- 3-5 years of experience in woodworking, carpentry, electro-mechanical systems, and metalwork
- Ability to diagnose, problem solve, service, and repair various equipment
- Knowledgeable of various materials and mixed media fabrication techniques
- Strong organizational skills; ability to schedule appointments with multiple maintenance contractors
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and relate effectively to a wide variety of individuals
- Responsive to phone calls, texts, and emails
- Ability to work both independently and in cross-functional teams to solve problems creatively
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time, lift and transport 50 lbs, climb stairs and ladders, bend, stoop, sit, push, pull, and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity
- HVAC experience preferred
- Demonstrated safety in the workplace; knowledge of OSHA practices
- Thrive on working in a fast-paced environment with a wide variety of job responsibilities and demands
- Friendly, outgoing personality and must enjoy working with young adults, children, and families in public spaces
- Occasional weekend and evening work required
- Experience working with children preferred
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Daily safety and cleanliness checks, making needed repairs, upkeep and cleaning of exhibits, building, and grounds before the museum opens to the public using professional techniques
- Develops and maintains a regimen of daily, weekly, and monthly exhibit upkeep including but not limited to cleaning various surfaces and components, ordering and replacement of worn parts for exhibits and equipment, and recommending appropriate equipment purchases and maintenance as necessary
- Works within an established exhibit and facility budget
- Meets with Visitor Experience Team regularly to evaluate exhibits and plans, and initiates exhibit improvement and upgrades
- Keeps staff informed of maintenance scheduling changes and exhibit closures or repairs that impact the public
- Maintains a current and continuous inventory of departmental maintenance equipment
- Schedules and coordinates janitorial, HVAC, landscaping, equipment inspection, large scale annual cleaning efforts with staff, and exhibit installation and de-installation
- Be knowledgeable of best practices and emergency plans
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Daily Expectations:
- Perform as well as delegate any and all daily duties in an appropriate manner
- Have up-to-date knowledge of current museum practices and trends
- Show flexibility in changing environments and be receptive to new ideas
