Gallery Attendant [Norman B. Leventhal Map Center at the Boston Public Library, Boston, MA]

Description:

The Norman B. Leventhal Map Center at the Boston Public Library is seeking student interns for the position of Gallery Attendant. As the first face seen by patrons, Gallery Attendants greet and welcome visitors to the Map Center, offer gallery tours, perform light reference work, and provide information about map exhibitions and the Map Center’s collection.

During times gallery traffic is light, the individual will work on special projects which will be determined by Map Center’s needs but assigned with an eye towards the individual’s skill sets, areas of study, and interests. Potential projects may involve public programming, educational outreach, reference projects, social media and/or web content creation, light cataloging, administrative tasks such as mailings and filing, or other tasks as needed.

This is a part-time position. Compensation: $10/hour.  Shift hours will be assigned among the group of Gallery Attendants.

Qualifications:

An ideal candidate will possess excellent interpersonal, communication, writing, and customer service skills; they should be internet and social media savvy, highly motivated, and detail-oriented.

Graduate or undergraduate students currently enrolled in a library and information science, history, museum studies, or education program are encouraged to apply. Previous library or museum work experience is beneficial but not required.  Coursework or experience providing reference services are preferred. Special interests in geography, history, maps, and mapping technologies are favorable.

The Norman B. Leventhal Map Center at the Boston Public Library is dedicated to the creative educational use of its cartographic holdings, which extend from the 15th century to the present.

In pursuit of its mission, the Center collects and preserves maps and atlases, promotes research in the collection, and makes its resources available to the public through its website, exhibitions, publications, lectures, and other programs.

The Center has a particular interest in developing innovative uses of maps and geographic materials to engage young people’s curiosity about the world, thereby enhancing their understanding of geography, history, world cultures, and citizenship.

Our department is seeking a part-time museum educator to develop family and youth programs (12 hours/week) that will educate and delight visitors to two anthropology museums. Assistant will help develop, document, market and staff summer and school vacation programs for family audiences and youth groups at the Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology and the Harvard Semitic Museum. Experience teaching programs in a camp, museum or school setting is essential. Educator will support the marketing of programs through email, direct mail or presentations. Experience writing curriculum outlines, training materials or lessonplans will be helpful. The ideal candidate will have a background in history, archaeology or anthropology; excellent writing skills, an outgoing personality, creative attitude towards programs, strong time management skills and speak a language other than English fluently. This position is 12 hours per week, 10-5 Fridays and two other mornings per week from 9:30-12:30 with the occasional weekend day assigned in advance. Coordinator of Teen Programs [The Whitney Museum, New York. NY]

Coordinator of Teen Programs

The Whitney Museum is hiring a Coordinator of Teen Programs. The successful candidate will be a dynamic educator with a deep knowledge of contemporary art, experience collaborating with artists, and a passion for working with NYC teens. The Coordinator will run the existing Youth Insights Programs, including Youth Insights Artists, Leaders, Introductions, and Arts Careers. The Coordinator will also work with the Teen Leaders to create teen-organized series programs and large scale events.

Responsibilities include:

– The design, management, and teaching of all aspects of the Whitney’s after school programs for high school students, including Youth Insights Artists and Leaders, Summer Arts Careers, and the YI Introductions Program for English Language Learner students
– The design and management (with our Teen Leaders) of large-scale public programs and smaller-scale, drop-in artist workshops for NYC teens
– Collaborating with Whitney artists to create and teach curriculum for programs
– Developing relationships with teachers from NYC high schools and staff at community based organizations, with the goal of doing targeted outreach to underserved or at-risk teen populations
– Inquiry-based teaching in the galleries
– The training and supervision of junior staff and interns
– Coordination and tracking of evaluation projects
– Management of budgets for current and future teen programming
– Working closely with other members of the School, Youth, and Family and Community and Access Programs teams, as well as other colleagues across the Museum
– The oversight and management of the Museum’s teen web pages and social media related to teen programming
– Writing grants and grant reports
– Meeting and communicating with foundations and donors
– Contributing to the museum community through publications and conference presentations

Requirements: B.A. (Master’s Degree or MFA preferred); background in art history, fine art, American studies and/or museum education; 3-5 years professional experience with fluency in a second language a plus. The successful candidate will possess excellent organizational and communication skills and will be able to work well in a fast-paced environment. Position requires travel throughout NYC and extended hours for program implementation during the week and on weekends.

Applicants should have experience working with contemporary artists, knowledge of art practice, experience working with high school students and teachers, knowledge of current educational theory, and experience with program research and evaluation.

Library Director [The Stonington Historical Society, Stonington, CT]

The Stonington Historical Society is seeking a part-time Library Director to oversee the functions and operations of the R.W.Woolworth Library and Research Center. The Woolworth is the Society’s main archival repository, that also houses textiles, artifacts, outreach and educational materials, books, and an inventory of past publications. The Library Director will be the main representative for public inquiry regarding collections, research, and relevant sources. This position provides recommendations for policy and procedures, collections acquisition, de-accessions, and archival management and care. This position oversees the cataloguing of archival materials and artifacts and maintaining and facilitating access to those collections through digital records, Past Perfect software, and through online and social media outlets.
