Assistant Curator [Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum]

Position Summary
The Assistant Curator is responsible for research and presentation of the permanent collection and special exhibitions. The Assistant Curator will contribute to and shape public programming. He/She will work closely with the Curator, Public Programming, and the Education department, drawing on research and knowledge of the collection. The position requires strong art historical and writing skills.

Responsibilities
• Research on the collection and for special exhibitions
• Participate in curatorial decisions in oversight of the collection and programs
• Contribute to the conceptualization and planning of exhibitions, public programs, and lectures
• Write texts for presentation of the collection and exhibitions (labels and guides, public relations texts, grant applications, online/website texts, digital interpretive tools, and other publications)
• Present lectures and public talks
• Coordinate collection database together with Curator of the Collection and in consultation with Registrar and Archivist; input information and approve entries entered by Junior Cataloguers
• Advise on Gardner Digital Repository and Photography project as needed
• Cataloguing of the library
• Act as a liaison with the Public Programming, Education and Public Relations departments, and Marketing as needed
• Participate in conservation research and treatment
• Provide art historical and historical guidance for professional researchers and Artists and Scholars in Residence concerning the collection and the history of the museum
• Provide research advice and editing for the Director’s Office and other departments as needed
• Other duties as required

Qualifications:
Qualifications
• PhD in art history, preferably with research specialties in Italian and/or Spanish paintings and drawing
• Proficiency in two foreign languages; fluency in one of them (preferably Italian and/or Spanish)
• 2-3 years of curatorial work experience in an art museum
• A record of publication in art history or a related field
• Strong independent research skills
• Excellent writing and editing skills
• Ability to work collaboratively

Operations Manager and Assistant to the Director [Fuller Craft Museum]

The Operations Manager and Assistant to the Director at Fuller Craft Museum is responsible for managing day-to-day activities of the museum in support of the Director and the team.

Areas of responsibility include:
Operations
· Manage institutional work flow and coordinating scheduling of departmental initiatives and programs
· Supported by the museum staff accountant, ensure that all departments adhere to budget guidelines, and receive appropriate approvals on expenditures
· Building a strong administrative, financial, and curatorial team, as well as excellent esprit de corps of the organization; when required, work with functional heads to complete hiring
· Manage Museum budgets; provide direction to the Financial Manager and Accountant on budget management, expense approvals, expenditure controls, cash flow management, and report preparation for the Finance Committee and Board of Directors
· Work with the Associate Curator and Exhibitions Committee to budget exhibitions and determine revenue and cost recovery opportunities
· Ensure that key function activities within the museum not otherwise managed by full-time staff are completed, such as human resources, volunteer groups, development, educational programs, and, in the absence of full-time staff, community outreach
· Set priorities and ensure timely completion of development related tasks, including support of grant applications, filings, financial reporting, projections, and proposals
· Manage all human resource activities, including hiring, evaluation and promotion, HR policies and policy administration, employee relations matters and issues, and benefits administration
· Drive development of the annual operating plan and budget; work with Museum Director and Financial Manager in developing annual priorities and budgets
· Manage all other such tactical matters as necessary to ensure the professional management and operation of the Museum

Assistant to the Director
· In collaboration with the Director, set daily, weekly and monthly priorities for the museum staff, including administrative, retail, facilities, financial oversight, human resources and risk management programs. This position also serves as a key employee for Museum operations and reports financial information to the Museum Director, Treasurer, Finance Committee and Board of Directors on a weekly and monthly basis.
· Provide administrative support to Director that includes all areas of museum operations
· With Director, conduct weekly staff meetings; set work priorities with departmental leadership and employees to ensure timely completion of deliverables With the Museum Director, ensure that all other activities of the museum are maintained to ensure timely and professional operations and coordinated with all building renovation projects.
Qualifications:
Experience:
· 15-20 years of prior general management experience in a service organization; non-profit or foundation experience desirable, but not mandatory
· Demonstrated track record of managing young organization through growth and expansion
· Proven ability to develop and manage budgets
· Experience in interfacing with, or managing, large groups of volunteers desirable
Reports to: Museum Director
Time Commitment: Part-time (20 hours per week). Time requirement to be periodically assessed based on workload.

Guest Curators (Volunteer) Unbound Visual Arts, Inc.

Description:
The Guest Curator will assist in creating contemporary art exhibitions that are fun, entertaining and meaningful yet still provide a strong learning environment. Following direction from the Executive Director, the Guest Curator may propose the exhibition themes, storylines, exhibitions titles and individual works of art selected from individual artists, prepare a compelling exhibition statement and sub-statements that are both descriptive and insightful, propose the individual art labels, organize exhibition binders with artist statements and resumes and assist in planning, designing and installing the exhibition. The Guest Curator may, under the direction of the Executive Director, assist in promoting and marketing the exhibition, including the on-line exhibition, as well as selling individual works of art. The Guest Curator may also be asked to lead short gallery talks and discussions. The Guest curators will work on-site for approximately 8-10 hours per week, though there is flexibility in this requirement. A commitment of 6 months is expected. Specific duties include, but not limited to, the following:
Prepare approximately 150 word curator’s statement. This is not an artist’s statement, but can use artist’s quotes and ideas.
Recommend the Exhibition title that captures the essence of the exhibition.
Prepare a shorter version of the curator’s statement for the press release (approximately 50-75 words)
Organize the narrative biography of the artist(s) for the press release
Prepare a narrative biography of the curator for the press release
Write a 1-2 sentence summary of the exhibition for postcard
Make suggestions for art installation and design
Assist with the installation
Put the entire exhibition with images on-line and PayPal (this is done with training and supervision)
Prepare a price list for print-out and distribution.
Qualifications:
Unbound Visual Arts, leading the way with curated exhibitions in the Boston area, is seeking energetic Guest Curators that have experience with theme-based exhibitions dealing with contemporary fine art. Guest Curators may not curate exhibitions that include their own works of art. Experience and training in other areas of fine art, exhibitions, galleries or museums are helpful but not required.

CURATOR OR ASSOCIATE CURATOR OF FURNITURE

The Curator of Furniture at Historic Deerfield (HD) is responsible for the development, care and interpretation of the furniture collection at the museum, for participation in the shared daily tasks and responsibilities of the Curatorial Department, for regular assignments in teaching and writing about the history and culture of New England, and for development of a second area of professional expertise in American and related decorative arts.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervision of the furniture collection, its care, conservation planning, research, cataloguing, and presentation, and of other collections as required.
Development of a second specialty in American decorative arts and in the history and culture of the Connecticut River Valley and New England.
Participation with HD curatorial and library staff members in the planning and implementation of historic house installations, changing exhibitions, outdoors interpretation, and upgrades to “The Museum’s Attic,” our visible storage area.
Participation in educational events: symposia, seminars, forums, museum courses, and lecture series.
Participation in electronic programming designed to engage broader participation and excitement in the assets and meanings of Deerfield, Massachusetts, through various kinds of distance learning.
Development of collaborative programs with other institutions to promote research on Deerfield and the Connecticut Valley.
Regular contact with museum colleagues, collectors, dealers, and auction house personnel in order to develop acquisitions, knowledge of the marketplace, and Historic Deerfield’s standing in the museum community.
Teaching and presentations for the general public as required and participation in Guides’ Training Programs as requested.
Participation in the educational content of the Summer Fellowship Program in Early American History and Culture, a nine-week course of independent study and museum apprenticeship for advanced undergraduates.
Participation in the life of the Curatorial Department through the daily administration of the collections, including the preparation of reports, annual work plans, and budgeting, and through staff committees, periodic fundraising and writing assignments for the Departments of Development and Marketing, contributions to Weekend Duty Officer responsibility (3-4 times a year), and communication with appropriate Trustee committees and with Summer Fellowship Program alumni/ae.
Performance of other tasks as required and requested.
The Curator or Associate Curator of Furniture reports directly to the Director of the Curatorial Department. The title and salary are commensurate with experience.

Master’s degree is highly preferred with experience in New England history and material culture and public speaking.

BENEFITS: Historic Deerfield participates in a TIAA-CREF retirement plan. Persons already enrolled in TIAA-CREF or who have been employed for two years by a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization may transfer to Historic Deerfield’s plan in which the institution pays half (5% of salary) and the individual pays half (5% of salary). Others must wait two years for eligibility. Historic Deerfield offers a health maintenance organization plan and a dental insurance plan. In each, Historic Deerfield pays 90% of individual coverage or 50% of family coverage. Historic Deerfield offers long-term disability insurance in which the employee pays 25% and Historic Deerfield pays 75%. Other benefits include paid vacation, paid holidays and paid sick time. The Gibson House Museum, located in Boston’s Back Bay seeks a part time museum administrator with broad administration experience. This job consists of two major responsibilities – managing all aspects of the museum including operations and supporting Board committees and their activities.

The Museum is preserved as it appeared during three generations of Gibson family occupancy (1859-1954). Since 1957, it has been operated as a house museum and open to the public. It is a time capsule of daily life during the mid-nineteenth to early twentieth centuries and as a museum of Victorian and Edwardian decorative arts. The Gibson House is a National Historic Landmark (2001), a recipient of a federal Save America’s Treasures grant (2004), landmarked as an Interior Landmark by the City of Boston Landmarks Commission (1992) and registered on the Massachusetts State Register of Historic Places (1982).
