History and Description of the Museum

The Tempe History Museum is a community history museum that explores Tempe’s identity and builds connections between residents and their community. The Museum programs and exhibits stress the power of history to provide insights for making decisions relevant to contemporary and future life in an ever-changing society.

The Tempe Historical Museum was founded by the Tempe Historical Society, a private non-profit group of citizens, which operated the Museum from its inception in 1972 until July 1, 1984 when it became a division of the City of Tempe’s Community Services Department.

In 1985, a bond issue was passed for the construction of a new public library and conversion of the former 36,000 square foot library building into a museum facility. A second bond issue was passed in 1989 to fund the design and construction of an 8,000 square foot exhibit gallery. The new Tempe Historical Museum opened its doors to the public on June 15, 1991.

Beginning in 2006, $4.2 million, mostly municipal bond funds, were allocated to renovate the exhibit gallery, and construct a new front façade and programming space. A multi-purpose room complete with built-in audio and visual equipment and a 250-seat capacity was added and the lobby space was doubled. The newly renovated museum, now called the Tempe History Museum, opened its doors to the public on February 27, 2010.
