Manager of Visitor Services [Lower East Side Tenement Museum]

Responsibilities Include:

Customer Service and Operations

Maintain department staffing requirements to support projected sales and museum visitation.
Oversee all levels of customer service by fulfilling daily goals and expectations to create a positive environment.

Staff Management and Leadership

Represent the Museum to the public in a welcoming, energetic, professional, and friendly way. This includes handling visitor complaints and issues both verbal and written in a timely and professional manner.
Maintain and schedule staff on a year-round basis to reflect seasonal variations and projected sales and payroll budgets.
Recruit, train, and coach a productive team.
Maintain and manage all aspects of staff development (Performance Reviews, Payroll, Dress Code, Individual Coaching and Disciplinary Actions)
Effectively delegate projects while at the same time allowing others the creativity to succeed by making their own decisions
Conduct productive daily meetings to ensure that daily schedule, tour operations and goals are met
Inspire, motivate, and encourage teamwork

Preparator/Curatorial Assistant [Monterey Museum of Art]

This position is responsible for all aspects of museum exhibition installations; helps oversee the safe handling and transport of all artworks to and from the museum, and assists the Curatorial Department with a range of collections management and administrative support.

Duties and Responsibilities – Essential Functions

Exhibitions

Plan, prioritize, and schedule installation of artwork, exhibition labels, and didactics
Assess resource needs and determines adjustments as required
Assist in the development of exhibition budgets
Maintain the museum’s workshop and related tools, hardware, and other equipment.
Inspect and maintain the galleries daily, including dusting and cleaning of artwork, changing lights, paint touch-up
Inspect and clean collection storage
Assist with developing and implementing procedures and guidelines for the safe handling and movement of all art objects
Assist with collections management, including the inventory of artworks, and help with database profiles
Document packing, crating, installation as needed
Submit purchase orders for collection supplies (archival supplies, installation hardware, packing materials etc.)
Rehouse artwork: box construction, replace old materials
Manage and prepare the packing and unpacking of artworks, preparing works for exhibition (mat, frame, stretch, etc.)
Assist the registrar with fine arts shipping arrangements with shipping companies
Assist with developing and implementing procedures and guidelines for the safe handling and movement of all art objects
Supervises curatorial interns, volunteers and works with artists, gallerists, collectors, colleagues
Responds to collection inquiries and outside exhibition proposals

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications for consideration:

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Art, Design, Studio Art, Art History, Museum Studies or a related field or a combination of education and experience will be considered.

Professional Experience: A minimum of three to five years of museum or gallery experience is required. The candidate will have a combination of exhibition and collection-related experience with exhibition design, graphics, labels and didactics, exhibition construction, gallery painting, and lighting. Curatorial-related experience includes research and planning, maintenance of master exhibition records, files and calendars, the preparation of exhibitions, maintains the permanent collections and loaned artworks, organizes art storage, and has experience with written materials.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Knowledge of art handling procedures for two and three-dimensional art objects in a variety of materials, sizes, and weights
Knowledge in using the standard tools, practices and methods used in painting, rough and finish carpentry and pedestal fabrication
Experience with the use and application of different materials such as various kinds of lumber, fabrics, plastics, mechanical fasteners, and adhesives
Extensive knowledge of design and construction of museum exhibits; mount making principles; lighting concepts and systems; safety regulations, practices, and procedures; and ADA requirements
Knowledge of A/V and multi-media installation
Knowledge of American Alliance of Museums professional policies and best practices
Ability to plan, prioritize, schedule, implement, and simultaneously oversee a variety of projects
Prepare cost estimates and make sound purchasing recommendations
Develop and implement design concepts
Participate effectively as a member of a cross-functional team and maintain effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, the general public, and representatives and colleagues from other museums
A valid driver’s license

Desirable Qualifications/Attributes: The position requires a broad variety of exhibitions and curatorial experience. The candidate must demonstrate flexibility, patience, strong organizational skills, excellent communication skills and hands-on abilities. He or she should be able to work in a fast-paced team environment as well as alone and have the ability to think creatively and problem solve.

Language Skills: The position requires organized and clear communication skills with the ability to read and interpret documents, write routine reports, and correspondence.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. The position requires the ability to compute ratios and percentages.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form. Ability to resolve problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, the candidate should have intermediate to advanced computer skills: Proficient at Microsoft Office Suite applications that include PowerPoint, Word, Excel and Adobe. Knowledge of EmbARK Collections Management Software, Adobe Creative Suite, and AutoCad or other exhibition design software is preferred.

The Curator of Contemporary Art reports to the Museum Director and is a specialist in the academic disciplines related to the art work in the contemporary collection. The chief responsibility of the Curator of Contemporary Art is to develop exhibitions and to care for and provide scholarly interpretation of all work in the collection area and on loan to the Museum, as well as to recommend the acquisition of new work.

Contemporary Forum, the auxiliary dedicated to contemporary art, has helped the Museum build the finest collection of contemporary art in the Southwest. It raises money for acquisitions, sponsors lectures and art films, assists emerging artists and visits private collections and museums both domestically and abroad. Contemporary Forum has more than 600 members, a 29 member board and assets of more than one million dollars.

The Curator of Contemporary Art must be a passionate and energetic person with the ability to manage, research, position, exhibit and develop an important collection, while working and accomplishing multiple projects concurrently. S/he must be a team player and have the demonstrated interest and ability to share the collection with diverse audiences and to build a positive image and lasting relationships for the Museum. S/he must be an innovative thinker and a great communicator with the ability to present the collection and the Museum to all internal and external constituencies and must have a reputation for the highest level of integrity and credibility. Candidates will have a Master’s degree in art history with an emphasis on contemporary art (a PhD is desirable) and a minimum of seven years increasingly responsible curatorial experience. The Lauren Rogers Museum of Art seeks a Curator of Collections & Exhibitions to administer the Museum’s collections and exhibitions program. The Museum, located in Laurel, Mississippi, opened in 1923 and is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. Recognized as one of the finest museums of its size in the South, The Museum is comprised of 32,000 square feet, and collections include American and European art, Native American baskets, British Georgian silver, Japanese woodblock prints, and a 12,000-volume art research library.

Responsibilities include coordinating the care, installation and interpretation of the collections; developing the acquisition plan of the collections; scheduling and coordinating temporary and traveling exhibitions; identifying conservation needs of the collections; editing and writing gallery guides, labels, text panels, and catalogues; training docents; and assisting with the Museum’s education curriculum.

Executive Director [Dubuque Museum of Art]

The Dubuque Museum of Art (DUMA) is seeking an Executive Director. The Director we seek will have a strong love, knowledge and understanding of art. This person will be a highly visible advocate for the museum, seeking opportunities to generate exciting programming that will increase community involvement and engage the art community. The Director will build substantive relationships with collectors, benefactors, and drive additional revenue.

Responsibilities include the general day-to-day management and operation of the museum in accordance with the strategic goals and policies established by the DUMA Board of Trustees. The Director supervises three professional staff members, reports to the Board of Trustees through its President and Executive Committee, and works in close collaboration with all standing and ad hoc committees of the Board. In addition to regular daytime office hours, this position requires night and weekend work.

The Dubuque Museum of Art is the oldest cultural organization in Iowa, established in 1874, with a long history of serving a vibrant and supportive community for over 125 years. DUMA was accredited by the American Alliance of Museums in 2004. DUMA maintains a permanent collection of over 2200 works of art that concentrates on early 20th century American art, including a significant collection of original works by Grant Wood and Edward S. Curtis, and contemporary regional art.
