The Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the world’s finest museums, is
seeking an Assistant/Associate Museum Educator in the Education
Department.

The Assistant/Associate Museum Educator strategically plans, implements,
and evaluates programs that directly and imaginatively engage a diverse
range of adults with works of art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art
through gallery-based experiences. The Educator reports to the Managing
Museum Educator for Gallery and Studio Programs and, alongside Educators
for Teen, Family, and Access and Community programs, contributes
essential leadership to the Gallery and Studio Programs Division.

With a keen grasp of The Met’s unique strengths and the landscape of
offerings in the New York City area, the Educator creates and executes
innovative programs that advance the Museum’s goals and are relevant to
current and new audiences. To accomplish this, s/he analyzes
opportunities and needs, collaboratively curates each season of
programs, develops teaching strategies and formats, staffs and
implements activities, and evaluates programs with an eye to the
alignment of resources and impact. The Educator develops and experiments
with techniques to support learning, including strategically using new
media tools within programs to heighten their benefit and/or reach. The
Educator recruits, trains, and manages contractual and guest educators
as necessary and in alignment with the Museum’s goals. The Educator also
administers programs, executes logistics, develops and maintains annual
budgets, and meets reporting requirements.

The Assistant/Associate Museum Educator will initially be responsible
for a daily schedule of gallery talks led by staff and contractual
educators which draw approximately 17,000 participants each year. The
Educator is expected to evaluate and transform the current program,
diversifying its offerings to broaden the Museum’s audiences and better
meet The Met’s priorities as well as the interests and learning styles
of the Museum’s many visitors. The position requires a command of art
history; a demonstrated track record of innovative and successful
programming for diverse audiences; an interest in adults as learners;
strong administrative skills; and excellent interpersonal skills,
including the ability to appropriately communicate, collaborate, and
negotiate with a range of stakeholders.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

*        Creatively and strategically plan and implement compelling
programs that engage a diverse range of adults with works of art at the
Met.

*        Develop a seasonal schedule of adult and intergenerational
programs in collaboration with Education, Curatorial, and other Museum
staff.

*        Identify target audiences and potential partners, produce
succinct and compelling content for print and online materials, and
working with numerous Museum departments, promote programs within the
building, virtually, and offsite.

*        Hire, train, supervise, and mentor museum educators who are
contracted to lead adult programs, regularly assessing their teaching;
as appropriate, hire guest presenters who bring unique insights to the
Museum’s collections and exhibitions, broadening the perspectives the
Museum offers its visitors.

*        Work closely with colleagues in Education, Digital Media,
Curatorial, Conservation, External Relations, Visitor Services, and
other departments to plan and execute programs.

*        Oversee and implement program logistics and budgets; this
includes handling the administrative and financial requirements of those
contracted to lead activities, providing logistical support for each
event, guiding volunteers who assist with programs, and accurately
reporting statistics.

*        Work with other Education and Museum staff members and/or
outside consultants to shape evaluation/assessment tools and techniques,
and find impactful ways to disseminate findings within the Met, as well
as nationally and internationally.

*        Work closely with other Education and Development staff to
draft program proposals and reports for funding agencies, Trustees and
donors, partners, and government stakeholders.

*        Teach periodically, including leading or co-facilitating
training sessions for volunteers, professional development sessions for
peers, and gallery-based programs for a range of general audiences
groups.

*        Other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

The successful candidate will possess a Master’s degree in Art History,
Fine Arts, Museum Studies, Education, or other relevant fields in the
humanities or social sciences as well as a minimum 4 years of experience
in program development, with a minimum of 1 year experience programming
for adult learners. Qualifications include a proven track record of
developing, implementing, and evaluating high quality, innovative
programs using original works of art in a museum setting and attracting
broad and diverse audiences; demonstrated knowledge of art history and
of current museum-based pedagogy, including an awareness of how digital
tools can be used to support teaching and learning; demonstrable
experience teaching in a museum environment; demonstrable experience in
maintaining key collaborative relationships in planning, negotiation,
and/or budgeting within a cultural institution; experience managing
budgets and administrative functions, in addition to exceptional
organizational skills; evidence of excellent interpersonal skills,
including the ability to communicate with diverse stakeholders
appropriately and strategically, verbally and in writing, using formal
and informal vehicles; supervisory experience; and command of Microsoft
Office Suite 2007/2010 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)-familiarity
with Microsoft Access 2007/2010 preferred.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the world’s finest museums, is seeking an Assistant/Associate Museum Educator in the Education Department.

This position reports to the Managing Museum Educator for Public and Exhibition Programs. The Assistant/Associate Museum Educator will plan and implement a Museum-wide program of free lectures and panel discussions for general audiences in addition to other events targeted at academic and by-invitation groups. The incumbent coordinates a broad
array of Museum Education events which take place in a lecture hall, auditorium, or gallery setting that are intended to meet general adult and specialized audience interests and needs. These include the Sunday at the Met series, symposia, weekday and Friday evening lectures, and specialized scholars’ day workshops. These are produced in collaboration
with the broadest range of curatorial, conservation, research, and professional staff throughout the Museum.

As a Museum professional, the incumbent will have diverse administrative responsibilities and duties to serve Education and the Museum as a whole, including:  contributing to the master schedule of Museum auditorium and lecture events; collaborating and coordinating with curatorial, conservation, and other professional staff to conceive, plan and implement meaningful education programs which appeal to a broad adult audience; overseeing and implementing diverse logistical components and budgets of programs, including contractual,
travel-related, administrative, and financial requirements for program participants; and developing and maintaining logistical support for each event and coordinating funding needs and reports with Development. Duties also include producing print and online materials and work with numerous Museum offices to promote and heighten awareness of various
Museum events, programs and projects; in addition to collaborating with numerous Museum offices to promote the Museum and its programs through potential partnerships and target constituencies, such as academic, cultural, or studio-based teaching institutions.

Teaching responsibilities also include gallery-based talks, conversations, and workshops for a range of general audiences. These include, but are not limited to, the general public as part of the scheduled Museum gallery talk program, teachers, visiting college and school groups and other private groups, in addition to other related duties.

QUALIFICATIONS: Successful candidates will have demonstrable experience teaching in a museum environment as well as a strong art historical background. The incumbent must have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, the ability to multi-task and close attention to detail. S/he will have a track record of creating and implementing successful lecture-based programs that attract broad audiences. Demonstrable experience in maintaining key collaborative relationships in negotiation, and in budgeting within a cultural institution, in addition to teaching wide and diverse audience groups in a museum environment is required. Status in academia a plus. Event management/event production experience preferred. M.A. and a background in art history are required. Full familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite 2007/2010 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) required. Familiarity
with Microsoft Access 2007/2010 preferred.

Managing Museum Educator

The Metropolitan Museum of Art seeks a Managing Museum Educator in the Education Department.  This position oversees gallery and studio experiences across audiences in a newly created division of the Education Department, reporting directly to the Chairman of Education. The Museum seeks an experienced Education leader who will serve as a key programmatic partner to the department head. As such, the successful candidate is responsible for strategic planning, conceptualization, development, and implementation of gallery-based and studio-based programs for all visitors, supervising staff for gallery programs, studio programs, programs for the disabled and other communities, and
audience-specific programs. This person will set goals in consultation with the department head and will ensure their accomplishment through exceptional supervision and mentoring of direct reports and the development of strategic interdepartmental collaborations within the Museum, as well as outside partnerships that advance the quality and variety of programs.

This position oversees and connects two crucial areas of museum experience- gallery learning and art making- in order to ensure their interrelationship and relevance for visitors of all ages. The successful candidate will bring new perspectives and innovations to the content and format of existing programs, and will engage new and broader audiences in in-depth, meaningful experiences around works of art. The training of teaching volunteers will be phased into this division and the position will ultimately be responsible for establishing and monitoring standards for quality teaching in collaboration with the volunteer organization.

The incumbent will be responsible for developing and implementing strategic vision and goals for gallery and studio programs for all audiences and lead evaluation efforts to determine success. S/he will also assess content, formats, and audiences of existing programs, and propose innovations and initiatives to optimize offerings, in addition to establishing partnerships with key external organizations and/or leaders to develop dynamic collaborations, interdisciplinary approaches, and expanded audiences. Duties also include developing the division¹s annual budget, analyzing and making recommendations for fee-based programs and revenue targets, and working closely with the Development Department to secure program support. S/he will administer a large division and establish efficient processes and systems for program development and logistics, in addition to supervising a large staff and
instilling high performance levels and accountability. S/he will also represent the department head in high level meetings and external partnerships.

Successful candidates will have 7-10 years experience within an art museum, in addition to a strong, proven track record of developing and implementing high quality, innovative programs using original works of art in a museum setting and attracting broad and diverse audiences. S/he must have the ability to effectively manage and mentor a large staff
within a complex institutional environment and to collaborate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders. Experience managing budgets and administrative functions, in addition to exceptional organizational skills and oral and written communications skills is required. M.A. in Art History, Museum Education, or other related field, or related experience is required. Must have knowledge of and experience with studio practice and contemporary artists in addition to knowledge of and demonstrated ability in gallery teaching and pedagogy.
