The City of Medford Office of Energy & Environment is looking for an undergraduate or graduate student interested in a year-long internship to provide general support to the office. We can offer both paid internships and Federal Work Study positions. The City of Medford is very environmentally progressive, and the E&E office works on programs and projects including municipal wide energy efficiency, reducing Medford’s carbon footprint, wetlands protection, open space development, and storm water outreach. The Office is also spearheading climate change assessment and adaptation planning for the City of Medford. Interns can identify and take the lead on projects based on their interest. For example, previous interns have helped with a local plastic bag ban ordinance, municipal tree protections, developing tools to communicate Medford’s climate vulnerabilities to residents, and generating new GIS data analysis. 

Interns work on individual projects and provide general office support including helping residents, updating the website, researching information needed by the Director and collecting energy use data from municipal sources and keeping it updated in state and federal systems. Site visits to environmental projects and public meetings throughout the city occur spontaneously throughout the year. Additionally, the office organizes Medford’s annual Harvest Your Energy Festival each fall, and an intern is hired annually to serve as the Festival Coordinator. 

The Office of E&E is a growing department in Medford and the center of environmental and clean energy development in the City. Located in Medford’s City Hall, the Office is in Medford Square, right off of I-93 and on many MBTA bus routes. The Office is open Mon, Tue & Thurs 8:30-4:30, Wed 8:30-7:30pm and Fri 8:30-12:30. The position requires up to full time during the summer and at least 10 hours a week during the school year, 6 of which must be during municipal business hours. Preference will be given to students who can start this summer either part-time or full-time and work through the school year.

 The City of Medford Office of Energy & Environment is looking for a graduate student interested in a year-long internship who can help move forward Medford’s climate change adaptation and mitigation planning. We can offer both paid internships and Federal Work Study positions.  The Director, with assistance from past interns, has published a municipal climate vulnerability assessment and begun the process of writing a municipal climate adaptation plan. The intern will work with city staff, residents, and will play a key role in drafting the adaptation plan. The intern will also begin to identify strategies to help Medford achieve its carbon mitigation goals and will complete Medford’s annual carbon emissions reporting. Projects will involve research and data analysis, as well as coordinating meetings with city staff and residents, preparing presentations and attending regional resiliency meetings as availability permits.

Harvest Your Energy Festival Coordinator – City of Medford, Office of Energy & Environment

A motivated individual is needed to help organize Medford’s annual Harvest Your Energy Festival. The Festival will be held on Saturday, October 19 (2019), but organizing and planning begins in spring 2019. It is held at the McGlynn school around the base of the Medford Wind Turbine, and typically has 35-40 exhibitors and sponsors and 400 attendees.

The Coordinator works in Medford’s Office of Energy & Environment (E&E) under the supervision of the Director and in partnership with resident volunteers to organize the festival. The Coordinator will contact exhibitors, organize volunteers, maintain financial records and perform the tasks necessary to coordinate the annual festival. The Coordinator will also help wrap up the festival in October, with thank-you notes and debriefing as necessary. There is also the possibility for future internships with the Office as funding becomes available. Strong preference to someone who can start in the spring, commit to at least part time in the summer and stay through the fall.

The Office of E&E is responsible for overseeing and implementing environmentally sound programs and policies in the City of Medford. Compensation of $12/hour is available for this position, through the City of Medford or Tufts Federal Work-Study. The coordinator works in City Hall and will help with general office tasks including fielding resident requests by phone and walk-in, while in the office. Medford’s City Hall is in Medford Square, we are a 15-20 minute walk or bus ride from Tufts campus or a 5 minute bike-ride. The Office is open Mon, Tue & Thurs 8:30-4:30, Wed 8:30-7:30pm and Fri 8:30-12:30. The position requires a minimum of 8 hours a week during the academic year, with the potential for full-time summer employment. It is expected that the Coordinator will continue working through the Festival on October 19, 2019.
