Graduate Intern, City of Medford (Medford, MA)

 The City of Medford Office of Energy & Environment is looking for a graduate student interested in a year-long internship who can help move forward Medford’s climate change adaptation and mitigation planning. We can offer both paid internships and Federal Work Study positions.  The Director, with assistance from past interns, has published a municipal climate vulnerability assessment and begun the process of writing a municipal climate adaptation plan. The intern will work with city staff, residents, and will play a key role in drafting the adaptation plan. The intern will also begin to identify strategies to help Medford achieve its carbon mitigation goals and will complete Medford’s annual carbon emissions reporting. Projects will involve research and data analysis, as well as coordinating meetings with city staff and residents, preparing presentations and attending regional resiliency meetings as availability permits.

The Office of E&E is a growing department in Medford and the center of environmental and clean energy development in the City.In addition to spearheading the City’s climate change resiliency and adaptation planning, it is responsible for overseeing and implementing environmentally sound programs in Medford. In cooperation with other departments and organizations, the E&E office works on many initiatives including climate change protection, wetlands protection, open space conservation, improving municipal wide energy efficiency, and stormwater outreach. Located in Medford’s City Hall, the Office is in Medford Square, right off of I-93 and on many MBTA bus routes. The Office is open Mon, Tue & Thurs 8:30-4:30, Wed 8:30-7:30pm and Fri 8:30-12:30. The position requires up to full time during the summer and at least 10 hours a week during the school year, 6 of which must be during municipal business hours. Preference will be given to students who can start this summer either part-time or full-time and work through the school year.

Job Requirements:

The ideal candidate will have strong research, data analysis, and communication skills, be organized, a self-starter, able to work independently and to think critically. Attention to detail and good customer service skills are important in this office. Prior experience with GIS is a plus.
