Writing Up Fellowship, The Konrad Lorenz Institute for Evolution and Cognition Research (KLI), ( Klosterneuburg, Vienna)

The Konrad Lorenz Institute for Evolution and Cognition Research (KLI) is an independent, interdisciplinary center of advanced studies in the life and sustainability sciences in Klosterneuburg (Austria, close to Vienna). Our Resident Writing-Up Fellowship is awarded to excellent doctoral students at the final stage of their PhD. We offers generous financial and career support for our fellows, including stipend, relocation allowance, and travel budgets, to enable them to work independently on research projects while supervised by their advisor in their home institutes.

We look forward to receiving applications especially, but not exclusively, from the following research areas: social-ecological research, innovation research, inter and transdisciplinary sustainability research, transformation and transition research, environmental humanities, environmental history, and environmental ethics, geography, environmental economics, political economy, history, philosophy, and social studies of environmental and sustainability research.

As “A Home to Theory that Matters,” the KLI privileges theoretical, conceptual, and formal as well as philosophical, historical, and reflexive work in the life and sustainability sciences. Thus, the 5 fellowships are especially well-suited for two categories of late-stage PhD students:

  • Those who have completed empirical research and wish to use the Writing-up Fellowship to elaborate on the (conceptual, epistemological, and methodological) underpinnings and implications of their work.
  • Those whose research deals with the historical, philosophical, and conceptual foundations of sustainability research at the science/society interface.

Beyond Waste Student Summits, Northeast Summit, (Syracuse, NY)

The Beyond Waste Student Summits bring together students to understand the systemic impact of waste, from extraction to disposal. These full-day, regional leadership intensives welcome students from all levels of experience and interest.

Attendees will have the opportunity to collaborate on simulated campaigns that range from building zero waste campus infrastructure to standing in solidarity with front line communities. All solution-building will address accessibility, equity, and systemic oppression.

These events equip students with the tools they need to become the next generation of leaders in the zero waste movement.

The Northeast Summit will be held at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry on February 22, 2020.

Environmental Research Fellowship, Tufts Institute of the Environment, Tufts University (Medford/Somerville, MA)

The TIE Fellowship is an opportunity for masters and doctoral students in any Tufts departments or schools to conduct interdisciplinary, environmental research projects with mentorship and guidance from Tufts faculty and TIE staff. Retreats, workshops, and presentations are organized by and for Fellows to help build skills and expand professional networks. Selected students can receive up to $5,000 in research funding!

2020 Sustainability Fellowship, The Sustainability Institute at University of New Hampshire (Durham, NH)

The University of New Hampshire’s Sustainability Institute is seeking applications for our 2020 summer Sustainability Fellowships.

UNH Sustainability Fellowships pair exceptional students from across the U.S. with host partners in New England to work on transformative sustainability initiatives that lead to integrated solutions.

Sustainability Fellows, mentored by the UNH team and dedicated individuals from our partner organizations, undertake challenging site-specific summer projects,  achieve high-impact results, and receive a competitive stipend for their contributions. Since 2008, 162 students have participated in the Sustainability Fellowship program – they are now working in a variety of sectors across the U.S.

Graduate Position, Inclusive Sustainability Education, University of South Dakota (Vermillion, SD)

Sustainability is improving human and environmental wellbeing both now and into the future.  Sustainability as an academic field of study is relatively new and methods for teaching transformative sustainability are still being developed.  Just as the definition of sustainability includes improving human wellbeing, the way that we educate for sustainability should be grounded in inclusivity.  The University of South Dakota’s Department of Sustainability+Environment is seeking a graduate student to conduct research that evaluates best practices for inclusivity in sustainability education.

The Department is looking for a student to start in Fall 2020 (a start date in the summer is also possible) in the sustainability graduate program.  The research will be in collaboration with USD’s Inclusive Science Initiative.  They encourage students with diverse backgrounds and experiences to apply.  Two years of funding at $20,000/year are secured.
