Internship, Massachusetts Housing & Shelter Alliance (Boston, MA)

COVID has dramatically changed Massachusetts’s homeless shelter system for unaccompanied adult individuals. MHSA sees a key opportunity to transition the shelter system from relying on emergency responses to focusing on housing solutions. MHSA has identified inadequate information about the current shelter system as a major barrier to pursuing this opportunity, as COVID-19 drove both the rapid creation of new sites and sudden changes to existing sites. MHSA is looking for a graduate student to a) assist with surveys collecting data about the services currently available, and b) use GIS tools to generate a public-facing map displaying the location and count of these services. This work will provide MHSA with a critical understanding about the shelter services currently available, plus new tools to use in its advocacy efforts.
