Aug 03: Tour of Drumlin Farm

Curious about local food production here in Massachusetts?  Interested in visiting a working farm?  Join Friends of MetroFuture at Drumlin Farm in Lincoln!  Explore the farm and field area and hear from a teacher naturalist about the challenges involved in growing and raising food locally and on a large scale.  Learn about the energy, quality of life, and ecological issues surrounding the food industry, including genetically modified food, land use, and management.  Make sure to dress appropriately as there will be some walking on dirt trails outdoors.  This is an all-weather event and it requires a fee of $9.25 per person that goes to Mass Audubon. Jun 14: Walking Tour of Downtown Salem

Tour downtown Salem and hear about different planning approaches and strategies to encourage redevelopment and to enliven and reconnect the waterfront to the city.  Salem is a mixed use and fascinating community that possesses a strong historic charm.  Along the tour, learn about the way that historic preservation continues to strengthen the surrounding community.  Spend the last half hour of the tour enjoying Salem’s weekly farmer’s market where home-made products accompany produce, coffee, and cookies.

Commuter Rails leave Boston for Salem approximately every hour from North Station.  For schedule information click here.  The tour will meet at the Salem train station at the kiosk with a map of downtown on it.  The kiosk is located at the bottom of the stairs.

Jun 20-22: Permaculture Your Campus Conference (UMass Amherst, MA)

The University of Massachusetts Amherst proudly announces the Permaculture Your Campus Conference held at the UMass Amherst campus June 20-22, 2012 with special keynote speaker Frances Moore Lappé, author of 18 books, including the 3-million copy Diet for a Small Planet.

At the international Permaculture Your Campus Conference, directors of the award-winning UMass Permaculture Initiative will give an introduction to permaculture in a campus setting and share the value that it has created for the University of Massachusetts system and local community. Participants will learn how to develop a successful permaculture initiative for their campus and will leave with their own individualized action plan for their own campus permaculture initiative.

Re2Pack, food for the summer and the MassCommute Bike Challenge

With commencement only two weeks away, you are probably (a) taking finals and writing papers, (b) preparing for commencement, or (c) moving off campus for the summer or (boohoo!) for good.

We can’t offer you much help with the first two things but if you are indeed moving off campus, you should know that TuftsRecycles has a list of things that they collect for recycling, among them: books and school supplies, carpets, crutches and air casts, electronics, clothing and linens, hangers, and unopened cans of food. Look for the proper boxes in the dorms and check the TuftsRecycles website for more details.

World Peas CSADo the CSA folks miss their fresh organic vegetables? I know I do. Most local farmers’ markets won’t start for a few more weeks (usually after Memorial Day). Download a schedule of farmers’ markets near Tufts from our website to look for one near you. In the meantime, don’t forget to sign up for the summer CSA with World PEAS, a program of the New Entry Sustainable Farming Project sponsored by Community Teamwork Inc. and the Freidman School of Nutrition.

Don’t forget – the 2012 Bay State Bike Week is going on from May 14-20 and you can still register and help Tufts win the MassCommute Bicycle Challenge. Tufts’ total miles wentfrom 130 to 537 in a week but we are still a distant 4th behind BU. Come on, Jumbos! If you signed up, contact us at the Office of Sustainability.
