TEEN PROGRAMS COORDINATOR
The Columbus Museum of Art (Columbus, Ohio) seeks a dynamic, knowledgeable, and highly-motivated individual to coordinate its SURGE Columbus, Art Lab and other teen initiatives.
The Columbus Museum of Art (CMA) has earned a reputation as a model for innovative visitor engagement as well as being a hub in Central Ohio for social, creative, and dynamic experiences.  CMA is committed to being a 21st century museum – one we define as “transformative, active, participatory, and impacting the health and growth of the community.”  With the opening of the Center for Creativity (CfC) in 2010, we adopted a social mission to cultivate, champion, and celebrate creativity through participatory experiences, in programs that allow for creative and social engagement, and most importantly, by reimagining the exchange between artists and our community.
In keeping with that philosophy, the Teen Programs Coordinator administers and organizes teen programming that fosters connected learning principles, critical and creative thinking, and active citizenship. This position coordinates, facilitates, documents, and prepares materials and learning opportunities for teen initiatives, and supervises program mentors and interns.
Duties and responsibilities include:

  1. Administering teen initiatives, especially Teen Open Studio as part of SURGE Columbus, as well as Art Lab and other teen workshops by managing internal processes and procedures as well as coordinating with outside partners. Regularly communicates with external partners, parents, teens and the general public.
  2. Overseeing Teen Open Studio on Thursday evenings (and one additional time starting in 2015) including teen workshops/learning opportunities. Duties include being a welcoming presence for a diverse public; serving as a professional and knowledgeable representative of the Columbus Museum of Art; maintaining student records and documentation; supervising teen activities; supervising program interns and mentors; preparing and maintaining necessary supplies and materials; and acting as mentor/teacher as needed.
  3. Serving as primary contact for CMA’s involvement in SURGE Columbus. Duties include:

    1. Maintaining regular communications with all SURGE partners, and assisting with ongoing development and vision of SURGE Columbus.
    2. Sitting on or co-chairing the SURGE Programming Team which meets bi-weekly to plan events for the SURGE network.
    3. Assisting and advising with design and implementation of SURGE City Key, an initiative to develop a tracking program to monitor teen participation in SURGE.
    4. Sitting on other SURGE committees as needed.
    5. Managing SURGE-related budgets, maintaining financial records for grants, and communicating between funders and CMA finance department.
    6. Working with Manager for Strategic Partnerships and Grants and Corporate Relations Manager to contribute to SURGE-related grant writing, final reports, and funder meetings.
  4. Administering and organizing Art Lab, a teen internship program that meets weekly through the school year. Duties include:

    1. Coordinating with teachers and internship coordinators to recruit, interview and select teen interns; share ongoing updates; and communicate additional information.
    2. Collaborating with the Teaching Artist for School and Teen Initiatives, who serves as the lead teacher for Art Lab. Duties include assisting with facilitation, curriculum development, and documentation; coordinating visiting artist and local expert visits; and coordinating field trips.
    3. Develops and oversees Art Lab-related budgets, and assists with Art Lab-related grant writing, final reports, and funder meetings.
  5. Recruiting, managing, orienting, and supervising program mentors and interns as part of these programs.
  6. Working with Director of Learning & Experience and Manager of Strategic Partnerships to plan future teen initiatives.
  7. Committing and actively working to support the philosophies of the Columbus Museum of Art and the Center for Creativity. Will be expected to clearly and professionally articulate values, philosophy, and program outcomes in both writing and public speaking.
  8. May be called upon to represent the Columbus Museum of Art and/or SURGE Columbus at local/regional/national conferences, multi-organizational meetings, or in the media.
  9. Working with other Learning/Experience Department staff, especially Teaching Artists, to select and coordinate visiting artists to work with programs.
  10. Engaging in documentation and assessment of programs, examining program processes, progress and finished work.
  11. Providing support for professional development of teachers as needed.
  12. Other duties as needed.

Qualifications:

  1. Undergraduate degree and prior experience in informal learning institutions, non-profit organizations, or after-school programs required. Degree in studio art, digital media, education, or related field preferred.
  2. Demonstrates a welcoming, encouraging, friendly, and people-centered demeanor.
  3. Demonstrates an open mindset and a passion for learning.
  4. Enjoys working with teens and is comfortable working with diverse audiences.
  5. Demonstrated planning, organizational, programming, and budgeting abilities.
  6. Skilled communicator and collaborator both orally and written.
  7. Demonstrated ability to use computers, various software, technology, and studio tools. Experience in video and/or audio editing strongly preferred.
  8. Must be available every Thursday evening during SURGE program hours and potentially during other evening program hours starting in 2015. Must be available for occasional weekend hours.

This is a full-time position. Work hours will vary depending upon scheduled programming. Compensation commensurate with qualifications and experience.
