Description

Director of The Fralin Museum of Art

The University of Virginia seeks an innovative and creative leader for the position of Director of The Fralin Museum of Art at the University of Virginia. This leader will provide the vision and expertise to engage the Museum in the research and teaching missions of the University. The Director will also promote the museum to a wider regional, national, and international audience. The Director will continue to build upon the Museum’s strong foundation while continuing to lead the institution in an upward trajectory into the next phase of development.

Mission

The Fralin Museum of Art at the University of Virginia is dedicated to creating an environment in which the largest possible share of its diverse constituencies, including members of the University community and the general public, can study and learn from the direct experience of works of art. The Museum promotes visual literacy as part of a broader, comprehensive education for all and seeks to enhance its visitors’ perceptions and understanding of world cultures throughout history and of art as an enduring human endeavor. To this end, the Museum shall acquire, preserve, study, exhibit, and interpret works of art of the highest quality in a variety of media that represent the world’s cultures from earliest times to the present.

Priorities

The Director’s primary priority is to serve the University and support the research and teaching mission of the institution. The Director will also work to identify and leverage opportunities to foster and enhance the study and direct experience of works of art for a broad and diverse public, including members of the University community and the general public.

The Director will have the opportunity to enhance collections, create programs that will engage the entire academic enterprise, and design a compelling public arts program. In collaboration with the Vice Provost for the Arts, the Director will play an integral role in designing and implementing UVA’s Strategy of the Arts, a new vision for expanding arts programs across the University and promoting interdisciplinary initiatives between the Art Museum and the University.

The Director will lead a multi-million dollar campaign, already in progress, to raise funds for an expansion of its galleries to accommodate larger, more innovative exhibitions and to provide space that will showcase its growing collection. The expansion will include enhanced support for educational programs, which are at the core of the Museum’s mission. New seminar rooms, and visible storage space will offer a unique, behind-the-scenes view into Museum operations.

The Director of The Fralin Museum of Art at the University of Virginia reports directly to the Vice Provost for the Arts.
