The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston seeks a full-time Assistant Paintings Conservator to fill a 2-year term position beginning late fall/early winter 2014. Under the direction of the lab head, the Assistant Paintings Conservator will undertake thorough technical examination and treatment of a large-scale, seven-panel, late Byzantine (possibly Cretan-Venetian) altarpiece. Note that the majority of this treatment will be carried out in a studio space visible to the public.

Essential functions: undertake treatment and research of painting; interact and communicate with visitors directly and through “new media;” document object condition and conservation work in writing and through photography, in accordance with departmental standards in collections database system; contribute to research, reports, lectures, and scholarly articles for the project.

35 hours/week; Mon-Fri, 9:00am-5:00pm.

PLEASE NOTE: If you have already applied for the Assistant Paintings Conservator position related to the conservation of the 18th century painting by Benjamin West, it is not necessary to apply (unless you wish to submit additional materials); you will automatically be under consideration for both positions.

Qualifications:
Qualifications: applicants should have a Master’s degree (M.A. or M.S.) with a specialization in paintings conservation from a recognized conservation training program; at least one and a half years of post-training experience is required; comfort with working in a studio visible to the public and with interacting with the public is essential; structural as well as aesthetic treatment skills are required for this challenging project; strong in-painting skills desirable; ability to work and excel as part of a team and in a rapidly-paced environment required; excellent written, photo documentation, and communication skills are essential.
