General Description:
The Assistant Museum Educator plans, facilates, and implements a Museum-wide Internship
Program for college and graduate level students. He/she oversees the Internship application
process, including review of candidates, placement across museum departments, fullfillment
of interns’ responsibilities within each department, structured training programs for teaching
in the museum galleries, along with museum seminars and panel discussions with educators,
curators, conservators and other members of the professional staff. Working with the Mananging
Museum Educator for Academic Programs, the Assistant Museum Educator contributes to
the strategic development and implementation of the Academic Programs division, including
assisting with fellowship programs and professional staff exchanges, as needed. The Assistant
Educator is expected to demonstrate leadership within the department and to contribute to the
field of museum education. Additionaly, he/she works with other Educators in the Department
to advertise, intrerview, select and train graduate students in museum education through the
Teaching Corps program. The Assistant Museum Educator also works collaboratively with a
wide range of professional staff internally across the department and the museum, including
the Development Office, Counsel’s Office, Communications, Human Resources, and Visitor
Services.
The Assistant Museum Educator teaches regularly across the department to all audiences. He/she
helps develop and implement programing for special exhibitions and the permanent collections.
He/she develops strategies for expanding the college and graduate level student audience for
program participation. He/she also conducts evaluations of the college and graduate internship
program, along with other programs under his/her purview to ensure they are meeting audience
needs.
Primary Responsibilities and Duties:
• Actively contribute new research and practice-based knowledge to the museum education
field, serving as a resource for students and peers.
• Plan, develop and implement summer paid, long-term, and semester based internship
programs for college and graduate students.
• Oversee intern application process, candidate review, selection and placement
• Oversee interns’ work including training, auditing and coordinating public teaching by the
interns.

• Work with other Educators to organize, interview/select and train graduate students in the
Teaching Corps internship program.
• Develop marketing strategies for promoting and diversifying the internship program.
• Oversee program budgets; evaluate programs and prepare donor reports.
• Teach audiences of all ages and abilities in all program areas.
• Work collaboratively with a wide range of professional staff across the department and
museum
• Develop and implement programming for the permanent collection and special exhibitions.

Requirements and Qualifications:
Experience and Skills:
• Minimum 5 years experience working in museums
• Demonstrated excellence teaching with original works of art in a gallery setting for a variety
of audiences, including adults, and training others in gallery based teaching practices.
• Evidence of collaborative skills and experience leading teams through complex projects.
• Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to multitask.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated capacity to effectively and professionally
communicate with different constituencies, verbally and in writing.
• Excellent communicator and ability to effectively maintain dozens of key relationships
within diverse museum departments.
• Demonstrated leadership skills to supervise and mentor interns.
Knowledge and Education:
• Masters degree in art history, museum education, or related fields
• Demonstrated knowledge of current theories and practices pertaining to adult learning,
gallery-based teaching and other forms of museum education and informal learning.
• Understanidng of the potential of digital learning and social media tools for adult audiences
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, experience with database systems, including Access
and Excel and solid computer skills required.
