Description:

The Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts (VCUarts) is conducting a search for a strategic, creative, and energetic Assistant Director for the Arts Research Institute who will support the School’s mission by assisting senior leaders to develop, maintain and manage activities related to the Arts Research Institute and subsequent VCU arts research investments. Reporting to the Executive Director for Research, the Assistant Director will coordinate VCUarts funding proposals, contribute to special initiatives, guide research development, assist with grants submissions, and work with faculty/graduate student partners and outreach activities related to VCU as well as regional and national opportunities. The Assistant Director will work as part of the VCUarts administrative team to meet short and long-term goals identified by the Arts Research Institute.

Located in Richmond, VA, the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts (VCUarts) is comprised of over 3,000 students and 16 nationally recognized programs in design, visual and performing arts. US News & World Report ranks VCUarts (arts.vcu.edu) as having the top public university art and design graduate programs in the nation. As part of an ethnically and culturally diverse urban institution, VCUarts is located on the university’s 75-acre Monroe Park campus situated in Richmond’s historic Fan District. The school’s newest facility, the recently renovated Depot Building, houses a state of the art sound studio with motion capture capabilities, a 6,000 sq. ft. interdisciplinary research space and the new student art gallery. The new VCU Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA), designed by award-winning architect Steven Holl, is poised to open to the public in 2017 and will be dedicated to flexible and responsive exhibitions and performances that examine art, design, and performance from multiple interdisciplinary perspectives (ica.vcu.edu). VCUarts is within walking distance to the Richmond Arts District and the nationally-recognized Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is one mile from campus. VCUQatar (qatar.vcu.edu), the university’s first international branch campus, is located in Doha, Qatar and serves students from more than 25 nationalities in design, visual arts, and art history.

Through the new Arts Research Institute, VCUarts intends to raise its research profile through increased special initiatives, expanded partnerships, ongoing grant applications and awards, collaborative interdisciplinary research, and identifying new sources of funding from federal agencies, foundations, sponsors, and others.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership support for activities of the Executive Director for Research.
  • Supports the Executive Director for Research to develop relationships with external and national funders, including federal agencies.
  • Represents VCUarts Research locally, nationally, and internationally at meetings and conferences.
  • Supports VCUarts Research strategic initiatives, including conducting research when appropriate.
  • Develops action plans, tracks grants and project activities, and supports senior leaders in strategic plan development.
  • Conducts grants research and assists faculty funding applications in all disciplines, including supporting faculty to develop research plans.
  • Coordinates federal grants applications with VCUarts administrative staff and VCU OSP.
  • Organizes educational research workshops for faculty and students.
  • Manages communications efforts, including the VCUarts Research website development, hard copy publications, and faculty deadlines updates in coordination with VCUarts Communications and VCU Communications regarding Research activities.
  • Serves on university and school committees as assigned.
  • Coordinates activities of the Research Advisory Council.
  • Collaborates with Arts Research Institute administrative staff.
  • Participates actively in personal scholarly goals.
  • Ensures all Arts Research activities are in compliance with state, federal, university and School policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.
