Job Summary:

The Department of Photographs is seeking a temporary full-time Curatorial Assistant to assist the senior curator with exhibition and publication logistics for a fall 2017 exhibition.  Primary responsibilities include coordination of loan requests, installation planning, publication imaging, miscellaneous editorial functions, file keeping, and occasional translation.  The assistant will be asked to maintain correspondence with professional colleagues, artists, collectors, and dealers in Argentina.

Major Job Responsibilities:

  • Applies knowledge of art history and art education to routine curatorial assignments
  • Follows established standards to ensure proper care and storage of objects in a collection
  • Documents objects and may perform basic fact finding to support curatorial research efforts
  • Assists with preparation of acquisitions proposals and may make acquisition recommendations to the curator
  • May publish original works in area of specialization
  • May organize and conduct presentations of material for classes and other scholarly groups
  • May select and provide images and write corresponding text and captions for promotion of a publication online and in print
  • May assist registrars and conservation staff with processing loans and updating the collection database records for items in a collection

Job Requirements

Qualifications:
    • Bachelor’s degree in art or art history required; Master’s preferred
    • 0-2 years art historical or museum experience
    • Competent to work in basic curatorial functions
    • Reading fluency in at least one foreign language (modern or ancient) required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • M.A./PhD candidate in art history preferred, with a specialty in the history of photography and Latin American art, preferably that of Argentina.
  • Fluency in Spanish required (reading, writing, speaking).
  • 1-3 years museum curatorial experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and database management programs.
  • Must be diplomatic; must exercise discretion in dealing with information about the collections; must have strong written and verbal communication skills; must be organized and efficient in managing time-sensitive deadlines.
