Summary

The Senior Educator is responsible for delivering high-quality, interactive science education programs to school groups and the general public visiting the California Science Center.  The Senior Educator’s primary job responsibility is to deliver education programming in the Wallis Annenberg Building for Science Learning and Innovation and large-scale demonstrations from the Science Live! Programs in the exhibit galleries.  Additionally, the Senior Educator assists with material and equipment set up, writes curriculum/prepares for future programming, assists in staff development, and provides administrative support for the Big Lab and Science Live! Programs. This position is required to support our summer camp programming for part of the summer months and the salary rate may be adjusted as needed to reflect this requirement.

Major Job Responsibilities:

  • During the months of September-May, spends about 70% of the time presenting educational programs for large groups in the Big Lab, exhibit galleries or education facilities, about 20% of the time preparing for future programs, assisting in the development of new programs, and training Education staff/volunteers, and about 10% of the time providing administrative support for the Big Lab Program;
  • During the months of June-August, spends 100% of the time with summer camp, responsible for the delivery of hands-on science camp programs to groups of preschool, elementary and secondary aged children.
  • Tracks guest attendance numbers and surveys for all programming;
  • Presents interactive demonstrations at programs such as Summer Camps and special events;
  • Reports on the status of assigned programs by tracking the use of consumable supplies and reporting any required materials or equipment maintenance needs to the appropriate supervisor;
  • Assists with the supervision of Science Live! Staff as needed;
  • Assists with training new staff and volunteers with education programs;
  • Assists in the development of new education programs;
  • Assists in administrative duties to be determined by the needs of the program;
  • Adherences to all policies and procedures including attendance policies and uniform guidelines;
  • Perform other duties as required.

Salary:

$13.25/ hour plus excellent benefits!

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • College background in science, education, theater or related field required;
  • Experience in teaching or working in a science center, informal educational or classroom setting;
  • Ability to complete work with little supervision;
  • Ability to write/develop curriculum for informal educational programming;
  • Excellent oral communication skills;
  • Effective interpersonal skills with diverse audiences;
  • Excellent customer service skills and team player;
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time;
  • Ability to lift, move, and organize supplies/equipment that may weigh up to 25 lbs;
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include weekends, holidays and evenings;
  • Bilingual is a plus but not necessary.
