Pre-Doctoral Research Fellow (Independent Contractor)

Description:
The ICA/Boston seeks a Pre-Doctoral Research Fellow with excellent research and writing skills and a specialization in modern and/or contemporary art to assist with the research, development, and writing for an upcoming ICA exhibition and accompanying publication and programs. The exhibition, Model Universe (working title) is organized by Dan Byers, Mannion Family Senior Curator, and locates a cultural moment and artistic impulse linked by, on the one hand, the examples of the historical wunderkammer and projects like Aby Warburg’s Mnemosyne Atlas, and on the other, our current era of the hyperlink, and web 2.0. Model Universe focuses on sculpture and large-scale installations (as well as film/video and photo works) that take display and collections as their medium, gathering and then deploying artworks, images, and other objects into immersive works that, in varying ways, explore the networks, acquisition, organization, and distribution of knowledge. Building on past models, this project’s artists reconfigure culturally determined taxonomies and categories to create new networks of affinity. In so doing they engage fundamental cultural issues embedded within the act of display, such as gender and sexuality, collective history, personal memory, and the role of art and subjectivity within dominant systems. Anticipated fellowship dates: October 2015-September 2016. Applications received until October 31, 2015.
