Description
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the world’s finest museums, seeks an Associate Curator/Curator. He/she will be an expert in 20th Century Historic Costumes, with skills in connoisseurship and the ability to propose and support curatorial initiatives in this field. He/she will participate in research, development, and active management of the Collection; the initiation of collection displays, major special exhibitions, publications and interpretation; and all activities of the Department. Reports to Curator in Charge.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES and DUTIES:
- Working closely with the Curator in Charge, devise and execute departmental collection and research strategies
- Initiate and organize collection displays and special exhibitions
- Act as key author and essayist for major exhibition catalogues and other specialized publications, including online content
- Answer correspondence relating to the Collection; assist the public and visiting scholars
- Contribute to public programs (Learning, Volunteers, etc.)
- Foster and maintain excellent working relationships with donors, patrons, collectors, colleagues from other international institutions, the scholarly community, dealers, and other individuals involved with the interests of the Museum
- Interact with potential sponsors and assist with fundraising as appropriate
- Advise on program planning for the Friends of The Costume Institute patrons’ groups and Visiting Committee
- Supervisor a team of researchers
- Other duties as assigned.

Requirements
REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience & Skills:
- Minimum of six years’ experience in a museum or academic institution
- Expertise in 20th Century Historic Dress
- Proven experience initiating and executing major loan exhibitions with international scope
- Demonstrated scholarly achievement and extensive published record, including evidence of original research
- Demonstrated engagement with international critical theory and artistic practice
- Demonstrated commitment to broad international audience engagement and learning
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with artists, museum colleagues, donors, and the general public
- Ability to create and maintain well-researched and precise records
Knowledge & Education:
- Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Art History, Costumes, or related field required
- Deep expertise in twentieth century Fashion History required
- Broad knowledge of international contemporary culture
- Excellent written and spoken English
- Exhibition experience required
- Proficiency in other languages preferred
