Position Title: Greenhouse Assistant
Department: Gardens and Grounds
Reports to: Greenhouse Supervisor
Type of Position: Full-time, hourly/non-exempt
Location: Hingham and Boston
Schedule: Will require work on weekends and some holidays
Summary of Position
The Greenhouse Assistant will be responsible for greenhouse, gardening, and grounds-keeping activities as directed by the Greenhouse Supervisor.
Responsibilities
• General maintenance of Museum’s living collection including trimming, potting, fertilizing and watering
• Transporting plants in and out of Museum greenhouse and courtyard
• Transporting plants to and from greenhouses in Hingham and Boston
• Courtyard maintenance
• General research on new cultural methods and horticultural techniques
• Upkeep and maintenance of the greenhouses and greenhouse work areas
• Application of organic pesticides and fertilizers
• Responsible for recording greenhouse activities and IPM records
• May be called upon to assist with educational groups and/or tours
• Other duties as directed by the Greenhouse Supervisor and Chief Horticulturist
Qualifications:
• 1-2 years experience performing greenhouse/gardening tasks
• Familiarity with greenhouse operations and use of organic pesticides
• Able to work independently and take initiative
• Ability to use judgment in interpreting and following written and verbal instructions on assigned jobs
• Physically able to assist one other person in moving plants and supplies up to 100 lbs.
• Ability to handle physical requirements that include moving hoses, standing for long periods, and working in hot conditions.
• Valid driver’s license and good driving record; comfortable driving large van

Exhibition Manager [MASS MoCA, North Adams, MA]

MASS MoCA seeks an Exhibition Manager to join our small and ambitious Visual Arts team. The Exhibition Manager reports to the Deputy Director and is responsible for planning, budgeting, drafting, and execution of MASS MoCA exhibitions in some 200,000 sq/ft of galleries.

The Exhibition Manager is lead coordinator and hands-on designer of exhibitions and special projects, managing and meeting deadlines to ensure exhibitions open on time, on budget, and at the highest possible quality. Working with visual arts and facilities staff, outside vendors, partner institutions, and visiting artists, the successful candidate will have a laser focus on value engineering, scheduling, and resource management.

The Exhibition Manager builds conceptual budgets for project feasibility, details and manages the final exhibition budgets, approves all expenses with the finance department, and regularly reports to the project team.

As a non-collecting institution, MASS MoCA’s Exhibition Manager acts as our de facto project registrar, arranging shipping, tracking loan agreements, and coordinating conservation of work while in our care.

The key skills required for success include the ability to work collaboratively, communicate clearly and diplomatically, schedule and budget accurately, and think creatively about value engineering and problem solving.

  • Five years’ experience working in exhibition preparation, production, and museum practices
  • Demonstrable experience developing and managing six-figure project budgets
  • Highly organized, adept with spreadsheets and software

Senior Exhibit Content Developer: As the content lead for new exhibits, you’ll develop original concepts for captivating exhibits and visitor experiences, research and create accessible scientific content, and produce interactives and media. You’re a gifted science communicator and collaborator with a 7- to 10-year track record of creating exhibit content that is intellectually and emotionally engaging. Position reports to the Associate Director of Exhibit Content Development.

Senior Exhibit Designer: As the design lead for new exhibits, you’ll envision, communicate, and advocate for creative design solutions to present scientific content in unusual and memorable ways. You’ll bring a sophisticated, modern design sensibility, an energetic, team-oriented approach, and 10 or more years of design experience focused on high-quality guest or audience experiences in museums, entertainment, or similar industries. Position reports to the Director of Exhibits.

Director, Gantz Family Collections Center [Field Museum, Chicago, IL]

The Field Museum collections are among the top natural history collections in the world for their breadth, scope, and quality. The Field is one of the few institutions with collections that cover planetary origins and the full history of life on Earth with botanical, zoological, geological, and anthropological specimens and artifacts. The Museum’s strategy in Science and Education (S&E) creates a strong opportunity for the Museum to increase the impact of its collections.

The Director of The Field Museum’s Collections Center (the Gantz Family Collections Center) will expand and shape the role that these collections play in global efforts to explore the past, understand the present, and ensure a future rich with biological and cultural diversity. The Director focuses the strategic growth of the collections, broadening their relevance and increasing their accessibility. This leadership position provides general oversight for the Museum’s holdings of close to 30 million specimens and objects, in addition to the library and archive collections. The Director works closely with the Center’s leadership (heads of the Anthropological, Botanical, Geological, Zoological, and Library collections) to supervise personnel in collections management, oversee collections-related policies and procedures, and develop the Center’s annual budget. The Director will have active programs in one or more of the Museum’s collection areas, interact with members of the other S&E centers on collaborative initiatives, and develop strong ties with academic institutions locally and worldwide

This position reports to the Vice President of S&E and works as part of a team with the Directors of the Integrative Research,Science Action, and Learning centers to set the vision and agenda for Science and Education at The Field Museum.

Duties and Responsibilities

Provides strategic vision and direction for the Gantz Family Collections Center by:

  • making museum collections more relevant to research, conservation action, and learning worldwide;
  • identifying and promoting priorities for Field Museum collections in consultation with S&E leadership and committees of the Board of Trustees;
  • developing and overseeing implementation of innovative approaches for increasing accessibility and use of Field Museum collections;
  • and identifying global priorities for natural history collections in cooperation with other museums

Provides oversight for collections growth, care, and use by:

  • supervising Center’s leadership and overseeing Center’s personnel;
  • overseeing strategic growth of the collections and collections staff;
  • overseeing deaccessions, including repatriation;
  • ensuring the highest standards of collections management;
  • and overseeing adherence to the Museum’s Collections Management Policy and regularly reviewing and updating policies for approval by Board of Trustees

Serves as the face of collections at The Field Museum by:

  • fostering relationships with scholars, conservation professionals, and educators worldwide;
  • supporting collaborations with exhibitions, marketing, and public relations staff;
  • building networks with museums for training in collections management;
  • and fostering collaborations between Collections Center staff and communities, citizen scientists, members of the public, and other stakeholders

Oversees finances for the Center by:

  • developing the annual budget for the Center with S&E and Center’s leadership;
  • supporting fundraising for the Center;
  • and helping secure grants for projects that improve the care, growth, access, and use of collections
Requirements

Qualifications

  • An accomplished leader with keen knowledge of natural history collections and collections management, and deep appreciation for collections-based science and science communication
  • A respected scientist with an advanced degree in the biological, geological, or social sciences, or equivalent
  • At least six years of managing natural history collections with a sound knowledge of best practices, ethics, and AAM accreditation standards
  • Experience managing a diverse team of professionals in a results-oriented setting
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build, lead, and sustain effective teams and collaborations

The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery seeks a charismatic and creative Major Gifts Officer to join its hard-working, fast-paced advancement team in building the base of individual supporters for the Museum. The incumbent will focus on restricted support for exhibitions, collections, educational and outreach programs, and endowment. This position is located in the Office of Advancement at the National Portrait Gallery and reports to the Associate Director for Major Gifts.

 

The Museum has significantly grown its advancement department in the last two years and, as a result, has seen dramatic increases in fundraising performance. Our challenge is to maintain this rate of growth for the duration of the museum’s $25 million comprehensive campaign, which concludes in 2018, the Portrait Gallery’s 50th anniversary year.

 

The Major Gifts Officer will:

 

  • Discover and qualify new prospects
  • Build and manage a national portfolio of 75-100 prospects rated at $25,000 and above
  • Develop and implement strategies to solicit 5-7 figure gifts
  • Close 10-15 major gifts per year toward an annual, individual dollar goal
  • Staff Museum executives and volunteer leadership, including preparing briefings, talking points, and follow-up letters
  • Design and execute appropriate events for the cultivation and stewardship of major donors
  • Maintain a comprehensive and detailed knowledge of the Smithsonian’s infrastructure, policies, and procedures

Requirements

Qualified candidates mast have a bachelor’s degree and at least two years of front-line fundraising experience, preferably within a large cultural institution or arts-related nonprofit. Must have a proven track record of fundraising success, including successfully identifying cold prospects and bringing them through the cultivation cycle to close six-figure gifts and above. In addition to possessing superior relationship management skills and the initiative and ability to work independently, the successful candidate must have the gravitas and leadership presence to interact with high level donors and arts patrons, as well as curatorial, administrative, and board leadership.

 

The Major Gifts Officer will be assigned to prospects in Washington, DC and in 2-3 other key regions across the country. Extensive travel is required as well as evening and weekend work to execute and assist with a variety of special events, tours, and meetings.  A passion for history, art, and biography is a plus.
