Job Summary:

The mission of the Mildred Hawn Exhibition Gallery in the Jake and Nancy Hamon Arts Library, SMU, serves a central role of community engagement in the arts. The exhibition program of the gallery is to hold two to three exhibitions per academic year by student and faculty members and professionals in the performing and visual arts, regionally, nationally and abroad, which center on academic areas represented in the Hamon Arts Library’s collections and the curriculum of the Meadows School of the Arts.

The Hawn Gallery Curatorial Fellow will report to the Director of the Hamon Arts Library, and in coordination with the Gallery Exhibition Committee, the Curatorial Fellow will manage all elements of the exhibition program in the Hawn Gallery and adjoining lobby area of the library.

The position is a one year assignment for 30 hours a week during the 2016-2017 academic year.   Recommended start date: May 2016.

Essential Functions:

  • Plan, develop, and coordinate two to three gallery exhibitions for installation during the 2016-2017 academic term;
  • Manage administrative requirements, including loan forms, shipment arrangements, installation schedules, and related matters;
  • Coordinate installation and de-installation of exhibitions, program events, activities, gallery talks, and Hamon Blog posts related to the exhibitions;
  • Develop strategies to expand and promote audience engagement among artists, students, faculty, and library staff at SMU and in the Dallas community.
  • Develop marketing materials for exhibitions and related events, including press releases and publicity kits, blog posts, and contributions to social media;
  • Participate in archiving exhibitions,  in coordination with library staff.
Requirements

Education and Experience:

Master’s degree in Art History, Curatorial Studies, or Museum Studies is required.

Experience mounting exhibitions and handling works of art in a gallery or museum is required.

Educational background in Contemporary art is preferred.

Experience working in a library environment is a plus.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong listening, interpersonal and verbal communications skills to effectively interact with a wide range of diverse constituencies.

Must demonstrate initiative with the ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision and collaboratively within a team environment.

Candidate must demonstrate strong problem-solving skills with the ability think collaboratively, and know when to ask for help.

Must possess strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.

Working knowledge with Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Word , Excel and Outlook) is essential

Physical and Environmental Demands:

This position must have the ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, crawl, climb, reach above shoulders, handle objects, push/pull, carry/lift over 25-50 pounds.
