This position is located at Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site (HOFU) in Elverson, Pennsylvania.  The collection at Hopewell Furnace contains approximately 405,000 items.  The collections principally focus on 19th century industrial and domestic artifacts, and archives.

This is a Temporary Appointment not-to-exceed 1039 hours in a service year.   The tour of duty for this position is Wednesday to Sunday.  The work schedule may be adjusted due to fluctuating work demands or budgetary reasons.  Selectees may only work 1,039 hours in a service year.   This position may be terminated at any time due to lack of work or lack of funds.   Selectees may be eligible for non-competitive rehire in future seasons depending on work demands and budget resources. Later selections may be made from this vacancy announcement as the need arises.

The position works with museum staff in implementation of museum maintenance and housekeeping schedules as well as integrated pest management.  Incumbent performs routine cleaning of objects and buildings as directed according to established standards within historically furnished rooms.  Identifies and labels objects by matching documentation field labels, notes, with objects.  Helps prepare objects for storage or display.  Packs and unpacks objects and processes them for storage or display.  Performs limited cleaning of new objects.  Performs routine research for catalog records as assigned.  Assists with the installation, repair and rehabilitation of exhibits.  Catalogs identified object groups, verify, updates, or revise museum record information and enter data into Interior Collections Management System (ICMS).

Physical Demands:  Work requires physical effort related to the cleaning, maintenance, and upgrade of multiple exhibits in several facilities.  You must be able to bend, crouch, stretch, reach, climb, stairs/ladders, and lift moderately heavy objects (up to 35 pounds) to complete duties.

Work Environment:  Work is primarily indoors in office settings, collections storage areas, or exhibits spaces.  Work may require extended periods in dusty environments, uncontrolled environments, outdoor sheds, or other outdoor building.

  1. Possess one year of general experience equivalent to at least the GS-03 grade level. Experience includes but is not limited to: experience using the tools, techniques, procedures, or methods related to the operation of a museum or similar collection, or to the handling, storage, care, protection, or recordkeeping of such a collection. Experience may have been gained in a museum, college or university, antique shop, commercial art gallery, or other setting involving work with collections of valuable objects or specimens requiring specialized care and handling. Other types of experience may also be qualifying if appropriate to the position to be filled. EXPERIENCE MUST BE DOCUMENTED IN YOUR RESUME

  1. Possess 2 years of education above high school with 6 semester hours of related courses. Related courses include art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to the position to be filled. YOU MUST SUBMIT YOUR TRANSCRIPTS

  1. Possess combination of the general experience and education as described above. For example, 6 months of general experience equals 50% of the experience; and 1.5 years of education above the high school level (that included the required course work) equals 50% of the education. Quality Ranking Factor
