Job Description
The successful candidate for Executive Director will be a passionate, dedicated and skillful leader who will become the public face of NURTUREart and build on our success and growth as we celebrate our 20th anniversary. The Executive Director has overall responsibility for the organization and works with the Board of Trustees to develop vision and strategy supporting our mission, including concrete strategic and operational plans. The Executive Director reports to the board, and oversees a staff of three, plus interns, volunteers and the teaching artists and curators of our Education Outreach Program. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of successful fundraising and grant writing, and experience in leadership positions, with administrative and fiscal management skills. The right candidate will be an effective communicator and collaborator who will cultivate an inspiring work environment.
Development
Lead the organization’s fundraising efforts and serve as leader and spokesperson for the organization to initiate dialog and raise visibility in the art community—including:
- identifying and pursuing new income sources
- cultivating individual and corporate donors and foundations
- writing grants
- spearheading fundraising events including the annual benefit
- participation in board development
Programming
Supervises the implementation of all programs, special events and publications—including:
- working collaboratively with staff to sustain the quality and vitality of our existing programs
- creatively developing new ideas that are consistent with the organization’s mission and strategic plan, meeting the needs of artists, curators and students
Leadership and Staff Management
Inspires, motivates, supervises and supports the staff, insuring a top quality, committed and engaged team—including:
- Hiring, training and conducting annual performance reviews
- Coordinating with the board’s committees, volunteers and partner organizations to facilitate open communication and collaboration
Financial Management and Administration
The Executive Director will oversee financial management in consultation with the Treasurer— including:
- preparation of an annual comprehensive budget for board review and approval, with a mid-year update
- oversight of monthly cash flow and expenditures
- ensuring sound financial controls, reporting, payroll and bookkeeping practices are maintained
- liaison to the accountant and staff for annual tax return and review preparation
- ensuring that human resource policies and procedures are in place and compliance is maintained
Advocacy and Public Relations
Participates in the Board’s advocacy efforts by serving as a leading spokesperson for NURTUREart—including:
- developing effective, long term working relationships both within the arts and beyond to ensure that NURTUREart is well represented in the community-at-large as well as with the organization’s constituency
- supervising all press outreach and contributing to the forging of partnerships that reinforce NURTUREart’s mission
- maintaining an effective online presence through our website and social media
- conducting all business at the highest standard of integrity, ensuring that all activities are legal and ethical
Requirements
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of relevant professional experience
- Knowledgeable and engaged in visual arts with a deep commitment to supporting and promoting emerging artists, art communities and art education.
- A proven track record of both public and private fundraising, including grant writing, donor cultivation and event planning.
- Prior supervisory experience, with engaged, positive management style.
- Demonstrated experience in financial management, including development and monitoring of a budget of at least 200K.
- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, networking and relationship-building skills.
- Excellent organizational, administrative and time management skills, ability to multi-task and prioritize.
