Description:
The Trustees is the steward of some of Massachusetts most popular destinations including the Castle Hill on the Crane Estate and Crane Beach, as well as over 116 reservations including working farms, urban gardens, campgrounds, inns and National Historic and Natural Landmarks from the Berkshires to Greater Boston to the Cape and Islands.

The Public Relations Intern will focus on supporting the fast-paced PR department at The Trustees, which will kick off a yearlong celebration of 125 years of conservation and preservation on May 21st. In addition to this year of special events, programs and promotions, The Trustees has many new initiatives as Massachusetts’s largest conservation and preservation nonprofit including its role as the programming partner at the new Boston Public Market and a public arts initiative.

The PR department at The Trustees employs a multi-faceted and multi-channel approach to media relations. This internship provides the opportunity to gain skills andexperience in public relations and media development. We are seeking candidates who are eager to learn the nuances of communications in a deadline driven environment at a nonprofit organization. At the end of the internship, the intern will have learned how to handle database and media report management and targeted list development, as well as gained experience in pitch research and drafting and the management of media relations. They will utilize and become comfortable with PR software Vocus/Cision and Burrelles and will leave with a broader understanding of the local, regional and national media landscape.

Commitment

15 hours minimum per week from September 2016-June 2017

· 3 days total (2 days in the Boston office, 1 remote)

· Hours and days flexible based on intern’s schedule, Monday-Friday availability required

· Start and end dates dependent on class/semester schedule

Responsibilities

· Assist with press clip creation and reporting, including audience figure research

· Assist with maintenance of media database and targeted list development

· Research editorial opportunities at long lead and short lead media outlets (local, regional and national)

· Research and draft pitches to target media

· Support day to day needs of department and occasionally support staff onsite at PR events in the Boston and Greater Boston area

· Complete projects on schedule

· Log internship hours in the Hands on Connect database weekly

Qualifications:
· An avid reader, interested in the media landscape

· Organized with strong attention to detail

· Focused and can work independently and multi-task when necessary

· Comfortable working within deadlines in a fast-paced environment

· Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite required, experience with press software programs a plus

· Excellent written and verbal communication

· Major in communications, marketing, or public relations OR prior communications, marketing, or public relations experience in the form of volunteer positions, internships, or fellowships highly preferred

· Research experience a plus

· Interest/background in conservation, recreation, history, culture and travel a plus
