Essential Functions

The Assistant Director for Collections and Exhibitions at the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts is responsible for leadership of the registration, facilities & preparation, and security departments of the Museum, as well as overseeing collections care and the logistical aspects of developing and implementing exhibitions. The Assistant Director for Collections and Exhibitions directs long-range planning relating to the collection and exhibition management, oversees short-term planning and day-to-day projects, and establishes and maintains departmental policies and procedures. A member of the senior staff, the Assistant Director for Collections and Exhibitions plays a key role in the development and implementation of institutional goals. Supervises registrars, facilities & art preparation staff, and security staff.

  • Provide leadership and general oversight of the registration, facilities & art preparation, and security departments to ensure the Museum’s rigorous standards of quality and consistency are met.
  • Oversee the overall exhibitions program, including develop and manage exhibition-related budgets, contracts, seasonal calendars, and production schedules.
  • Oversee the day-to-day installation and management of exhibitions as pertains to registration, facilities & art preparation, and security.
  • Oversee the care and management of the permanent collection, including manage collection-related budgets; coordinate conservation treatments as needed; and research, write, and implement collection-related grants.
  • Direct building maintenance issues pertaining to the care and safety of the collection and facilities in accordance with professional museum standards.
  • Serve as an adviser for Art on Campus projects.

Requirements
Required Qualifications

MA degree in art history or equivalent, and 5-7 years of museum registration, collections, and exhibition management experience.

Strong oral and written communication skills and attention to detail. Exceptional organizational, time management, analytic, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.

Familiar with professional museum standards and procedures as they pertain to registration, exhibitions, collections care, construction and building systems, and security.

Ability to collaborate effectively and supervise staff and interns.

Experience with collection management software, Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite.

Preferred Qualifications

Reading knowledge of Italian, German, or French is desirable.
