Gallery Director

Hampshire College is accepting applications for a gallery director via their website at https://jobs.hampshire.edu/. The gallery director reports to the dean of humanities, arts and cultural studies, and is responsible for all operational aspects of the Main Gallery, the primary exhibition space at Hampshire College. The director will curate and install innovative exhibitions, work collaboratively with faculty and students, and contribute broadly to academic programs. Responsibilities will include supporting the educational mission of the College, gallery management, curatorial practice, stewardship of Hampshire’s small permanent collection, and grant writing and fundraising. The director will work closely with students as they conceive, produce and install their thesis exhibitions. The gallery director will also work collaboratively with Museums10 and the Five Colleges. This full time, 12-month benefited position requires occasional evenings and weekends. We offer a competitive salary and an excellent benefit package.

Qualifications:
An advanced degree with a minimum of three years relevant experience is required. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of global and transnational curating as well as hands-on skills and understanding of all aspects of installation and de-installation of artworks. Expertise on how to care for and manage art collections, including registration practices; object storage, handling, and care; documentation; packing, shipping, insurance, and legal and ethical issues. Familiarity with best practices in the acquisition, preservation, and display of new media art is required. Candidate must have the ability to manage resources and handle all logistics relating to gallery events including exhibition design; publicity; event planning; and arranging symposia, talks, and panels. Successful candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, writing and design skills. Solid computer skills and the ability to learn the database for the permanent collection (MIMSY), and to update the Gallery webpage is also required. Previous experience and success with grant writing, fundraising and development is a must. A commitment to working with people from diverse backgrounds is essential. Candidate must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. This position requires a valid driver’s license and ability to successfully meet the requirements of Hampshire College’s driver credentialing policy.
