Description

The Andy Warhol Museum is one of the four Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, and a collaborative project between the Carnegie Institute, the Dia Art Foundation, and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. We are currently seeking a Curator of Education and Interpretation to join our team.

The Curator of Education and Interpretation will be the primary advocate for the museum’s audience-centered enrichment philosophy, which is based on visual literacy and active looking. The Curator of Education & Interpretation leads efforts to create, implement, and evaluate a wide range of innovative educational programs, activities, and interpretive strategies that connect diverse visitors (onsite, offsite, and via the Web) with the museum’s collections and exhibitions. S/he supervises a high-performing team of museum educators; has an integral role in planning for exhibitions, permanent collection, Web-based, and other visitor-related projects; initiates collaborative efforts to further the museum’s educational mission; and contributes to a host of planning and audience development activities within the museum and Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh. Effectively manages education budgets and actively seeks ways to increase earned and contributed income.

Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: The position requires an advanced degree and substantive academic training in art history and arts education; additional course work in museum studies and/or management is desirable. The position requires a minimum of five years of experience in a supervisory role in museum education with a track record of innovation and leadership and a demonstrated ability to generate earned and contributed income. A record of research and publishing in art, art history, and/or museum education is a plus. Three years of experience in arts education advocacy on institutional, community and national levels and demonstrated experience in grant writing and fundraising.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: The curator must have a broad knowledge of art history, including the ability to understand and explicate a range of topics relating to the museum’s collections and exhibitions. Awareness of effective strategies for engaging diverse museum visitors of all ages is required, including an understanding of human development, learning theories, school curriculum, and program design and evaluation. In-depth appreciation and understanding of Andy Warhol, popular culture and contemporary social, artistic and cultural issues is desirable. The ability to lead and inspire a diverse team of artist-educators is essential. Excellent written and oral presentation skills are required, along with proficiency with budgeting. The successful candidate must be able to thrive in a complex, fast-paced, and multitasking environment. Some evening and weekend hours required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is primarily sedentary in nature, no special demands are required.
