Paid Intern Educator (MEIP) [Brooklyn Museum, NY]

We invite promising young professionals to join our Museum Education Internship Program (MEIP). As an Intern Educator, you will gain in-depth fieldwork experience by designing, facilitating, and teaching programs that address the needs of adult, school, youth and family audiences. Participate in hands-on workshops and reading discussions, and conduct qualitative research throughout the year to learn about museum education theory and practice. Ongoing professional development provided by our experienced education and curatorial staff ensures that Intern Educators leave the program with extensive experience teaching and programming for a variety of audiences, and with a completed professional teaching portfolio.

The Brooklyn Museum’s Museum Education Internship Program (MEIP) has been around over 25 years and has deeply influenced the field of Museum Education. Program alumni have pursued careers at such cultural institutions as the Denver Art Museum; the Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Qatar; The Metropolitan Museum of Art; the National Museum of the American Indian; the New Museum; and the Queens Museum of Art, as well as the New York City Department of Education and the School District of Philadelphia.

These full-time, ten-month, salaried positions with benefits are open to college graduates and run from September through June. Applications for the 2016-2017 cycle are due by April 3, 2016.

Requirements

The Museum Education Internship Program (MEIP) is designed to support the professional learning of highly motivated individuals who have recently completed undergraduate or graduate studies. Successful candidates must possess the following:

• demonstrated interest in art, education, and museums;
• investment in working with diverse museum audiences;
• commitment to teaching with art objects;
• support for our mission and collections;
• experience teaching and/or programming in formal or informal learning environments; and
• ability to lift 25 lbs., stand and walk for up to 2.5 hours at a time, and spend periods of time distributing materials to and interacting with children who are seated on the floor.

Experience working with public programs, school audiences and/or teaching art-making is strongly preferred. Proof of ability to work in the United States is required. We will not sponsor visa applications, though past applicants have worked with international student organizations to secure visas for themselves.
