Associate Director [Sheldon Museum of Art]

The Sheldon Museum of Art seeks an Associate Director who will contribute to the conceptualization and
realization of the Sheldon Museum of Arts’ vision, mission, and strategic directions. Lead the financial,
administrative, and operational functions of the organization and provide the direction, oversight,
implementation, and management of personnel, operations and budgets. Work with the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln, Sheldon Art Association, and University of Nebraska-Foundation to coordinate
investments, budgets, contracts and agreements on behalf of the Sheldon Museum of Art. Facilitate
collaborative working processes and effective communication among colleagues to develop schedules,
work plans, evaluation metrics, and budgets that achieve the museum’s strategic goals. Reports to the
museum director.

The Sheldon Museum of Art, located in a Philip Johnson landmark building, houses one of the nation’s
premier university collections of American art, with over 12,000 objects, including European and Latin
American holdings. The Museum Sculpture Garden has over 30 works of outdoor sculpture, including
monumental works by Di Suvero, Lachaise, Oldenburg, Otterness, Serra, Shea, and David Smith.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in arts/museum administration, business administration,
accounting or related field, plus 5+ years’ experience in an art museum, art organization or university with
an operating annual budget of $1 million or more with two years as a supervisor. Must possess strong
computer software skills in Microsoft Suite including proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.
Ability to promote teamwork, creativity, and open communication; and ability to exercise discretion and
independent judgment in the performance of duties with only general supervision or direction essential.

Preferred Qualifications: Prefer Master’s degree in the arts, art/museum administration, business
administration, accounting, or related fields; experience developing budgets, demonstrating fiscal
responsibility, managing personnel, dealing with human resource issues, and balancing a broad range of
constituencies and priorities; excellent planning and organizational skills; clear motivational abilities;
strong written and oral communications; ability to concurrently mange multiple complex tasks; and
knowledge of SAP accounting, purchasing and payroll system or similar integrated financial system.
Preference given to individuals with curatorial experience.

Group Services Coordinator [National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium]

The Dubuque County Historical Society (DCHS) and National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium (NMRMA) is seeking candidates for the Group Services Coordinator Position.  This position is part of a team that works together to provide the best possible experience for every individual visiting the Museums of DCHS. An ideal candidate is someone with exceptional service skills, able to think on their feet, lead in a team setting, organized, and positively portray the organization. This position requires working a flexible schedule with some weekend and holiday hours.

Job Requirements

Primary Duties

  • Provide an exceptional experience for all visitors of the DCHS and NMRMA.

Sales Director / Auction Coordinator [Gerald Peters Gallery / Santa Fe Art Auction]

Auction Coordinator:
The Auction Coordinator is primarily responsible for cataloguing and preparing consigned property for sale.  In addition, this position works closely under the supervision of Auction Director to develop increased responsibility in the production of appraisals and proposals, increased knowledge of domestic client relationship management, and relevant markets for the art category, and increased negotiating and selling skills.

Duties Include:

  • Research property including authenticity, bibliography, provenance and exhibition history.
  • Catalogue property for public and private sales and write and prepare catalogue essays.
  • Review incoming photo inquires with senior specialist or department head to determine sale potential.
  • Work with all client categories (collectors, dealers, corporations, institutions) in the area of business-getting and selling, under the supervision of department head.
  • Participate in catalogue production and layout process
  • Prepare condition reports of consigned property prior to the auction
  • Participate in telephone bidding with clients during auction
  • View and visit competitors auctions and track overall results
  • Other duties as assigned by Auction Director

Sales Director:

A portion of the year the position will be responsible for gallery art sales, including floor duty as coordinated with other Directors and staff.  Occasional weekend work is required. Must be a self-starter with proven sales history, a team player, possess strong closing skills, and a passion to sell. Experience in art sales or high-end sales required.

Duties Include:

  • Initiate and close sales
  • Liaise and create new client relationships
  • Develop sales strategies
  • Consignment agreements
  • Handling of inquiries for sales / consignment of art for gallery via email, regular mail, phone and walk-ins.
  • Represent the gallery at events, auctions, and museum/gallery openings
  • Attendance at gallery openings, handling of tour groups and attendance at after-hour events as required.
  • Excellent written/verbal communication and negotiation skills
  • Additional duties as required
  • Manage Estate artwork
  • Represent a select number living artists

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in an office setting, gallery setting and off-site in various client settings (private, corporate and institution.)

Gretchen Hupfel Curator of Contemporary Art [Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts]

The Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts (www.thedcca.org), a dynamic non-collecting contemporary art center located on the Riverfront Wilmington in Wilmington, Delaware, seeks a skilled and team-oriented Gretchen Hupfel Curator of Contemporary Art to start in June 2015. The position will be responsible for building and implementing a program of temporary and travelling exhibitions for the center. An ability to serve artists, cultivate and maintain positive relationships with patrons and collectors, engage community and program partners, and work with the DCCA’s Education Department to meaningfully connect with area students and educators are important aspects of this position.

Position Responsibilities

The functions and responsibilities listed below are those that represent the majority of time spent working in this job. Management may assign additional essential functions and responsibilities related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

  • Conduct ongoing research and organize a cohesive program of exhibitions of contemporary art for six on-site galleries.
  • Work with the Executive Director, Board of Directors and senior staff to cultivate trustees, collectors, donors, and artists for program support and capital support. Participate in fundraising events; organize travel opportunities for patrons, as well as selected donors and trustees.
  • Manage curatorial department staff.
  • Working with the Education Department, devise interpretative strategies for understanding the works exhibited, through labels and other media. In addition, work with Education and Special Events to devise a calendar of lectures, symposia, and other programs for all audience levels to complement the DCCA’s contemporary program.
  • Regularly network with peers nationally and internationally to co-organize exhibitions and tour DCCA-originated projects.
  • Collaborate with guest curators and artists on project-based installations and programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of responsibility and requirements of the position.

The position reports directly to the Executive Director and is a full-time salaried position that is eligible for the DCCA’s benefit package. Salary offered is commensurate with experience.

Executive Director [New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science]

The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, located in Albuquerque’s historic Old Town, is opening a search for a dynamic leader to administer all aspects of the museum’s operations. This AAM-accredited museum is a collections-based institution with over 50 employees and over a quarter-million visitors each year. The museum includes a planetarium/observatory wing, research labs, exhibit studios, 3D large-format DynaTheater, and multiple exhibition galleries.  Through a partnership with Albuquerque Public Schools, the museum also runs the Sandia Mountain Natural History Center which serves over 12,000 students and teachers each year.

The Executive Director should have a demonstrated ability in the administration of a complex organization with multiple partnerships, including a supporting foundation with its own Board of Directors. Significant experience in a senior management position and an advanced degree in a natural history or science-related field are strongly desired. Experience with science-based museum exhibitions, and both formal and informal science education is preferred.  A proven record of broad community impact, extending beyond the walls of the museum, is also desired.

This is an exempt position within the State of New Mexico and reports directly to the Museum Board of Trustees and the Secretary of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. It offers a competitive salary with generous benefits and retirement package.
