Description:
The Harvard Art Museums is accepting applications for the position of Press Intern, working in the Communications Division. The intern will be tasked with clipping, scanning, and filing all press related to the Harvard Art Museums. Working closely with the Public Relations Manager and Communications Staff Assistant, the intern will be trained to preserve and catalog clippings for print and digital records. The intern may also be asked to assist with other needs of the Communications Division, which may include inventory of the research library, answering email inquiries, updating the communications databases, and collating and distributing promotional materials. This is an unpaid internship and the applicant must be receiving academic credit to be considered. The internship will run through August 2016.

Please note that the location for this particular position is in an off-site building in Somerville, near the Sullivan Square T. MBTA buses 86, 91 and CT2 run nearby. Hourly shuttle service is provided to and from the off-site location to the Harvard Art Museums, with the shuttle stop located on the corner of Prescott Street & Broadway in Cambridge. There is a parking lot (free) at the Somerville location if you choose to drive there.

Qualifications:
The internship is open to qualified students who are able to begin work in May or earlier. The hours are very flexible within the M-F work week. Applicants with a strong interest in the arts and have interest in archives management, public relations, arts administration, and/or communications are encouraged to apply. Applicants should be independent, organized, and detail-oriented, and possess computer skills including Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and Power Point. Familiarity with Evernote and Filemaker a plus, but not required.

Summer Curatorial Intern (Paid) [Chesterwood, Stockbridge, MA]

Chesterwood Summer Curatorial Intern (Paid)

Description:

Chesterwood, a Historic Site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and a Massachusetts and National Historic Landmark, in Stockbridge, MA, seeks a curatorial intern for summer 2016 (June 1st – August 31st). Local and regional college students with an interest in art, history and museum work are encouraged to apply.  A stipend of $2,000 will be awarded for this internship (funded by the National Trust for Historic Preservation).

 

Responsibilities

The curatorial intern will work closely with the Executive Director on exhibition preparation, collections care and management of the permanent collection, special events, educational programming, and other tasks relating to the interpretation of the site.

 

The intern will:

  • Assist with organizing Chesterwood’s annual outdoor contemporary sculpture show, Contemporary Sculpture at Chesterwood, including working with contemporary artists on scheduling sculpture installations, loan agreements, publicity, marketing and programming. This year the sculpture show will be curated by Jim Schantz of the Schantz Galleries in Stockbridge, MA.  Glass will be the primary medium of the sculpture show.
  • Help coordinate and staff special events, such as lectures, sculpture demonstrations, and VIP parties.
  • Update database on contemporary artists who have exhibited at Chesterwood.
  • Assist with collection management projects, such as researching, cataloguing, and photographing collections.
  • Answer correspondence relating to the art and life of Daniel Chester French and his family as well as Chesterwood’s fine art and decorative arts collections.
  • Write and/or edit object descriptions for our internal collections management database.
  • Act as an interpreter or guide by leading tours or answering questions from the public.
  • Additional responsibilities and long-term projects can be tailored to fit your interests.
  • Summer internship is full-time, five days a week.  Some nights and weekends will be required to assist with special events and programming.
  • Start date and exact length of internship to be determined by the Executive Director and the intern.
  • College or graduate school credit can be offered if you make the necessary arrangements with your school.  (Final decision as to whether credit will be provided is at the discretion of your school.)

 

Located in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, Chesterwood is the country home, studio and gardens of America’s foremost sculptor of public monuments, Daniel Chester French (1850-1931). The Site consists of 10 buildings and 122 acres, including French’s recently rehabilitated Studio. Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate (junior or senior preferred) or graduate student majoring in art, art history, communications, history, and/or historic preservation.  Post graduate students are also welcome to apply.
  • Excellent research, writing and verbal skills.
  • Ability to work independently, set priorities, meet deadlines, and manage a number of concurrent projects in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Excellent computer skills, including thorough knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and use of digital photography.
  • Must own or have access to a car.  (Chesterwood is a relatively rural site.)

Director of Finance and Administration [The Bostonian Society, Boston, MA]

Description:

The purpose of this position is to ensure the smooth administrative functioning of the Bostonian Society and to handle the financial affairs of the organization. This includes performing as the Finance Director as defined under the Society’s by-laws, overseeing the areas of technology and human resources, supervising the accounting assistant and office assistant, and handling other functions assigned by the Executive Director.

Finance: Incumbent is responsible for all financial processes and controls. This includes;

  1. Managing the Society’s annual audit, tax reporting, and compliance with relevant government regulations;
  2. Serving as staff liaison with the Board’s Finance Committee;
  3. Serving as staff liaison with the Board’s Investments Committee;
  4. Compiling monthly financial results and presenting them to the Executive Director, Treasurer, Board, staff, and others, as relevant;
  5. Preparing the annual budget with the Executive Director, and providing oversight of it throughout the year;
  6. Ensuring that routine accounting processes, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll, are performed accurately and in a timely fashion;
  7. Ensuring that appropriate controls are maintained for the Society’s Commercial Operations division;
  8. Managing relations with the Society’s bank(s), and purchasing of insurance.

Human Resources:Incumbent serves as human resources director. This includes:

  1. Overseeing salaries with the Executive Director;
  2. Overseeing hiring procedures for full time employees;
  3. Ensuring that HR policies and procedures are in compliance with relevant state and federal laws;
  4. Managing the employee benefits program;
  5. Serving as staff liaison to the Governance Committee and the Personnel subcommittee of the Board of Directors.

Technology:Incumbent is responsible for oversight of the Society’s technology systems, and for managing the Society’s relationship with its IT consultant.

Governance:Functioning as Finance Director as defined under the Society’s by-laws, incumbent is customarily invited to attend meetings of the Boardand its Executive Committee as a non-voting observer, and may be asked by the Executive Director to assist Board officers, including the Treasurer, by providing financial information and preparing and delivering reports, and the Clerk, by taking notes and drafting minutes.

Qualifications:
The incumbent must have strong management, financial and technological skills. The position ordinarily requires an MBA, with studies in accounting and financial management, or equivalent training, as well as at least five years of relevant work experience in financial and personnel management

Physical Requirements:

The work of this position takes place in a normal office environment and an historic site. Some staff offices are located on the third floor of an historic building that is not handicap accessible. Incumbent should be able to carry equipment and supplies up and down stairs.

Exhibitions and programs at The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art are designed around a commonly shared belief—that picture books bring great joy to children, while fostering important skills, like critical and creative thinking, early literacy, and art appreciation. The Art Studio at The Carle is our hands-on laboratory where we develop new programs that can meet our mission and expand our scope and reach. These programs encourage open-ended exploration and personal expression, and are inspired in part by the early learning centers of Reggio Emilia and Pistoia, Italy.
The Art Educator reports to the Director of Education and works collaboratively with a co-educator. Together they design, develop, and implement activities and programs for The Carle’s Art Studio, including drop-in public programs, guided group tours, activities for special weekend events and school vacations, professional development workshops for educators, and family- and child-centered workshops. Additional responsibilities include presenting art-centered student outreach programs and professional development workshops throughout the region. As a team, the Art Educators manage the Studio’s budget and lead a team of approximately 20 volunteers, work study students, and interns.

Position Summary:

The EcoTarium, A Museum of Science & Nature, seeks a Sales and Guest Services Manager to oversee all aspects of the daily operation of the Department. Responsibilities includesupervising and coordinating the work of the reservations office and floor staff to ensure that the EcoTarium operates efficiently and provides for an exceptional guest experience. The Manager makes sales, takes reservations, produces and monitors their department budget, manages the guest services data bases, oversees the birthday party program and ensures guest safety. The Manager is the point of contact for issues that affect day-to-day operation of the museum and grounds and takes part in planning and development of projects and policies. Successful candidates must be highly organized, flexible, possess solid computer skills, have extensive customer service experience and possess an entrepreneurial spirit.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the Sales and Guest Services Department, including the Ticket and Information Desk, gatehouse, museum shop, Reservations Office and Birthday Party program
  • Hire and provide training, cross-training, mentoring, leadership, supervision and evaluation of the Sales and Guest Services staff with team leaders
  • Produce staff work schedule and coordinate staffing for day-to-day operations, special events, facility use and other special needs
  • Develop and implement written staff protocols, guidelines and expectations
  • Develop an on-going training program and staff meeting schedule to ensure a basic level of shared knowledge and to build expertise
  • Run morning meetings with daily updates

  • Monitor customer service, exhibit/facility upkeep, lost guest, accident/incident intervention and reporting and other direct impacts on the guest experience

Non-Essential Functions:

Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree preferred
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in management and customer service
